The Group Exercise Instructor creates safe, engaging, and motivating fitness experiences for members and program participants. Whether leading a high-energy class such as Zumba, Cycle, or Les Mills or guiding a mindful Yoga or Pilates session, the instructor helps participants feel welcomed, supported, and confident at every fitness level. Â
This position works independently under the general direction of the Director of Health and Well-Being and is responsible for delivering high-quality classes while building meaningful connections with members and supporting the YMCA’s mission. Â
CORE EXPECTATIONSÂ Â
PROGRAM EXECUTIONÂ Â
• Plan and lead safe, organized, and engaging group exercise classes in accordance with the standards of the class format and applicable certification requirements. Â
• Provide clear instruction, demonstrate proper technique, and offer appropriate modifications for different abilities and fitness levels. Â
• Monitor participants throughout each class and respond appropriately to safety concerns or individual needs. Â
• Create a positive and encouraging atmosphere that keeps members engaged and excited to return. Â
• Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled classes. Â
MEMBERSHIP ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENTÂ Â
• Welcome participants and help each person feel comfortable, included, and supported. Â
• Build positive relationships with members and encourage continued participation in YMCA programs. Â
• Serve as a friendly and approachable resource for members while connecting them with the YMCA’s mission and community. Â
• Respond professionally to questions, feedback, and concerns. Â
STAFF ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENTÂ Â
• Communicate regularly with the Director regarding attendance, member feedback, substitutions, equipment needs, and facility concerns. Â
• Work collaboratively and respectfully with fellow instructors, branch staff, and leadership. Â
• Attend required staff meetings and complete all assigned training. Â
• Remain current with certifications, industry standards, and best practices for the class format being taught. Â
FACILITY MANAGEMENTÂ Â
• Keep exercise spaces clean, organized, and ready for participants. Â
• Properly set up, inspect, and store equipment before and after each class. Â
• Promptly report damaged equipment, safety hazards, or facility concerns to the Director. Â
Qualifications
• Current certification appropriate to the class format being taught, such as Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Cycle, Les Mills, ACE, or AFAA. Â
• Current CPR and First Aid certification. Â
• One to two years of group exercise instruction experience preferred. Â
• Strong teaching, communication, and relationship-building skills. Â
• Ability to motivate and engage participants with different fitness levels and abilities. Â
• Comfortable using technology for scheduling, timecards, communication, and training. Â
• Enthusiastic, dependable, professional, and committed to creating an inclusive member experience. Â

PHYSICAL DEMANDSÂ Â
• Ability to actively lead classes and demonstrate the movements, exercises, or postures required for the class format. Â
• Ability to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, crouch, and move throughout the class. Â
• Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.Â
