Summary:
The OneDigital Self-Funded Center of Excellence (SFCOE) provides OneDigital offices with a full suite of self-funding solutions and support, including traditional stop loss, captives, level-funded options, and TPA (ASO) marketing. Our goal is to match each client with the right self-funded strategy based on their risk-profile while reducing complexity for the field and ensuring clients receive competitive pricing and best-in-class contract terms.
The Underwriting Consultant is a senior technical role within OneDigital’s Self-Funded Center of Excellence (SFCOE). This individual leads stop loss underwriting analysis and strategy for groups as assigned, partnering closely with the Vice President of Self-Funded Solutions.
The Underwriting Consultant serves as a trusted technical advisor to OneDigital field consultants and brokers nationwide. The role requires deep expertise in self-funding and stop loss, including claims analysis, deductible and contract structuring, carrier negotiations, policy review, and risk modeling. In addition, this individual mentors junior team members and helps build their technical understanding of stop loss and self-funded plan strategy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
- Conduct in-depth claims analysis for assigned groups, including large claimant activity, high-cost diagnoses, run rates, loss ratio trends, and emerging risks.
- Evaluate stop loss deductible levels in relation to each group’s claims history, financial tolerance, and overall risk profile.
- Analyze renewal laser positions including straight lasers, conditional lasers, and no-laser alternatives and develop data-driven negotiation and placement strategies.
- Identify opportunities for proactive contract, funding, or plan-design adjustments in advance of renewal.
- Recommend stop loss contract provisions, policy structures, and carrier placement strategies that align with each group’s risk profile and objectives.
- Review and compare carrier products, services, contract language, and policy terms to support informed recommendations
- Manage the stop loss marketing, analysis, placement, and renewal process for groups as assigned.
- Own the analysis and marketing process for assigned group stop loss policies, ensuring timely, accurate, and strategic recommendations.
- Partner with the SFCOE claims and service team to support complex claims, policy, and reimbursement matters.
- Maintain thorough documentation and oversight of policy placement, renewals, and carrier communications for assigned groups.

Qualifications, Skills, and Requirements:
- Deep technical knowledge of stop loss insurance, including specific and aggregate coverage, deductible structures, policy provisions, lasers, claims reimbursement, and renewal negotiations.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing claims data, evaluating risk, identifying cost drivers, and developing underwriting recommendations for self-funded groups.
- Ability to review a claims file and tell a story, identifying what's driving cost, what's likely to recur, and how it should affect placement strategy
- Identify loss ratio trends and recommend proactive contract or plan design adjustments ahead of renewal
- Strong writing skills with ability to correspond and present in a clear, concise, and persuasive manner to C-Suite Ability to build trusted relationships with field consultants, brokers, carrier partners, and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects at once and thrives in a fast paced, energetic environment
- Highly organized and driven to accomplish the goals set before him/her
- Supports team members during peak schedule by offering help where needed
- Comfortable serving as a mentor and informal resource for junior colleagues
- Ability to translate complex underwriting analysis into clear, actionable recommendations for consultants, brokers, and client leadership
- A self-starter who works independently, but also cooperatively in a close team environment
Education, Training and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Math, Accounting, or another related field, preferred.
- 7+ years’ experience working for a group insurance carrier, broker, or consultant, strongly preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of group insurance underwriting including Stop Loss, and Self-Funding
- Familiarity with multiple insurance companies and TPA’s strongly preferred.
- Underwriting experience required
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other tools used for claims analysis, modeling, and reporting.
- Current life and health producer license or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire (company paid), required
The typical base pay range for this role nationwide is$120,000 to $135,000 peryear.
Your base pay is dependent upon your skills, education, qualifications, professional experience, and location. In addition to base pay, some roles are eligible for variable compensation, commission, and/or annual bonus based on your individual performance and/or the company’s performance.
