Job Summary
The Industrial Software Engineer I is an entry-level software engineer who contributes to the applications and services that connect Mesa's distributed power-generation assets with customers and internal operations. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, this position develops and tests production software across Linux-based edge devices, secure communications, cloud services, databases, APIs, and user-facing applications. The Engineer I builds foundational software-engineering capability while gaining practical experience with industrial equipment, operational technology, networking, deployment, and production support.
Essential Duties
- Develop, test, debug, and maintain production software used to monitor, manage, and communicate with Mesa's distributed power-generation assets.
- Implement application logic, device services, APIs, data processing, database interactions, alarms, and user-facing functionality from defined requirements.
- Write maintainable code and automated tests using established standards, source control, peer review, and software-development practices.
- Participate in design discussions covering interfaces, data models, communication flows, error handling, observability, and maintainability.
- Diagnose software defects, performance issues, data-quality problems, and failures within distributed applications.
- Contribute to CI/CD, versioning, release, deployment, monitoring, rollback, and production change processes.
- Develop and support software on Linux-based telemetry and industrial edge devices, including services, logs, permissions, packages, and hardware-facing interfaces.
- Assist with provisioning, configuration, remote updates, health monitoring, and lifecycle management for connected devices.
- Integrate software with PLCs, controllers, sensors, instrumentation, and third-party equipment using industrial and IP-based communication protocols.
- Configure and troubleshoot required network connectivity while applying established OT security practices for access, communications, hardening, segmentation, and patching.
- Troubleshoot cross-layer issues, document solutions and operating procedures, and communicate progress, risks, and blockers with engineering and operational teams.

Qualifications
Education
Required
- 4 Year / Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline from an accredited university; and/or equivalent combination of relevant education, technical training, and experience.
Preferred
- Coursework, internships, projects, or technical training involving software development, Linux systems, networking, embedded systems, industrial automation, cybersecurity, cloud platforms, or data systems.
Experience
Required
- Any of experience writing, debugging, and testing software in at least one general-purpose programming or scripting language.
- Anyof demonstrated programming experience through employment, internships, coursework, personal projects, military service, or technical training.
Preferred
- 2 years of relevant experience in software development, Linux systems, embedded or edge computing, SCADA, telemetry, industrial networking, controls, operational technology, or a related field.
- 2 years of experience with JavaScript or Node.js, Python, Bash, SQL, Git, automated tests, APIs, relational or time-series databases, messaging systems, or cloud services.
- Honorably discharged service veterans are preferred.
Certifications, Licenses & Registrations
Required
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a driving record satisfactory to the company and its insurers.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• Foundational knowledge of software design, data structures, interfaces, error handling, debugging, testing, source control, and code review.
• Ability to translate defined requirements into readable, maintainable software and verify behavior through appropriate testing.
• Foundational understanding of APIs, data models, databases, messaging, and distributed application behavior.
• Working familiarity with Linux command-line tools, processes, services, permissions, filesystems, logging, networking, and package management.
• Basic understanding of CI/CD, deployment, monitoring, configuration management, and application lifecycle practices.
• Basic knowledge of IP networking and familiarity with SCADA, telemetry, PLCs, instrumentation, or operational technology.
• Awareness of secure-development and OT cybersecurity principles, including least privilege, segmentation, encryption, patching, and credential protection.
• Analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, clear communication, and ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines while seeking guidance appropriately.
• Must be able to fluently speak, write, and read in English.
