Summary

Apple’s Environmental & Supply Chain Innovation (ESCI) team is seeking an operationally driven, intellectually curious Industrial Hygiene Technical Program Manager to join our Smarter Chemistry initiative. We are looking for an energetic program architect—someone who thrives in undefined territory, looks beyond static standard operating procedures, and sees the immense potential to create a lasting, broader impact across our global manufacturing footprint and the wider industry.

In this role, you will be Apple’s forward scout on complex occupational chemical exposure challenges that may not yet have an established playbook. You are equally energized by deep technical engagement with scientists, toxicologists, and Engineering and Operations teams as you are by the operational and organizational rigor required to bring safer chemical solutions to global scale. If you are passionate about driving bold progress within our supply chain and safeguarding the health of the people who make our products, join us.

Description

As our Industrial Hygiene Technical Program Manager, you will take ambiguous, high-stakes chemical exposure challenges and convert them into structured, scalable initiatives with clear ownership, milestones, and measurable outcomes. You will drive deep technical discussions with Engineering and Operations teams, toxicologists, supplier leadership, and partner teams to embed industrial hygiene gates directly into new material qualifications, establish global manufacturing VOC standards, and direct phase-out roadmaps for restricted substance non-compliant chemistries.

Critically, this role is designed to architect programs that scale. Rather than managing routine audits or checking off static compliance lists, you will design the systems, binary operational triggers, and governance frameworks that empower Third-Party Assessors (TPAs) and suppliers to execute at world-class standards. You will bridge technical exposure science and high-volume factory realities, ensuring Apple’s chemical safety leadership continues to set the benchmark across the global manufacturing landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Convert ambiguous chemical exposure and occupational health challenges across our supply chain into structured, high-impact initiatives with clear milestones, ownership, and scale-up strategies.
  • Partner directly with Engineering and Operations teams, toxicologists, and Product Design to architect and embed robust industrial hygiene evaluation gates into new material qualification workflows.
  • Lead cross-functional replacement roadmaps for chemistries non-compliant with the Apple Regulated Substances Specification (RSS), resolving technical trade-offs between material performance, cost, and worker health.
  • Develop, standardize, and scale global manufacturing VOC standards and chemical handling requirements across component and final assembly facilities.
  • Direct Third-Party Assessor (TPA) partners, defining technical statements of work, managing vendor execution, and holding external consulting firms accountable for high-integrity field deliverables.
  • Identify systemic exposure risks in non-routine operations (NPI builds, line maintenance, residue handling), designing engineering-control governance models that eliminate reliance on static paperwork.
  • Synthesize complex technical findings and program status into clear, high-level narratives and scorecards for senior Operations leadership to drive rapid alignment.
  • Drive industry-wide capability building by establishing scalable assessment frameworks and continuous improvement roadmaps across regional APAC suppliers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety (OHS), Chemical Engineering, Environmental Health, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of direct technical experience in industrial hygiene, occupational chemical exposure assessment, or chemical safety engineering within manufacturing or top-tier technical consulting environments.
  • Demonstrated domain expertise in chemical exposure pathways, raw process chemistries (solvents, cleaners, adhesives, inks), and Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) frameworks.
  • Proven track record leading complex technical programs or initiatives, with the ability to take undefined technical challenges and turn them into structured, executed roadmaps.
  • Experience managing external technical vendors, consulting firms, or Third-Party Assessors (TPAs), including scope definition, budget management, and deliverable accountability.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated ability to bridge deep technical dialogues with scientists and operational reviews with Engineering and Operations teams.
  • Professional fluency in English and Mandarin (spoken and written) to drive technical alignment across global teams and regional supplier manufacturing sites.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally (25–35%) across APAC manufacturing facilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health & Safety, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Professional credential in the field: Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) strongly preferred. (Formal project management certifications like PMP are viewed as a value-add only when supported by a proven, foundational career in industrial hygiene or occupational chemical safety.)
  • Direct experience integrating chemical hazard or health-and-safety gates directly into New Product Introduction (NPI) or engineering material qualification processes.
  • Hands-on familiarity with consumer electronics assembly (FATP) or sub-tier component manufacturing operations.
  • Experience architecting corporate chemical policies, such as VOC limits, restricted substances phase-outs, or chemical hazard screening frameworks (e.g., GreenScreen®, EPA Safer Choice).
  • Systems thinker who naturally identifies leverage points across complex, multi-tiered global supply chains to drive industry-level change.
  • Demonstrated resilience, comfortable making sound technical decisions and driving progress with incomplete information in fast-paced operational environments.
