Industrial Engineer, Retail Technology Optimization | 12 Month Term Contract
As an Industrial Engineer, Retail Tech Optimization, you will play a key role in identifying, quantifying and validating opportunities to simplify frontline work, improve operational execution and create productive capacity across our grocery stores.
This is a 12-month contract role focused on project-based Industrial Engineering and continuous improvement. You will spend approximately 50% of your time in stores across the Greater Toronto Area, observing how work is performed, engaging with frontline colleagues, conducting work measurement and testing future-state processes.
You will work alongside Retail Tech Optimization, Experience Design, Store Operations and Technology teams to understand how work happens today, challenge unnecessary complexity, model better ways of working, and quantify the operational and productivity impact of proposed changes.
The role reports to the Sr. Director, Retail Tech Optimization with a dotted-line relationship to Loblaw's Labour Management Industrial Engineering capability for methodology, standards and technical guidance. Labour Management will continue to own Loblaw's ongoing engineered labour standards and labour models, while this role focuses on project-based opportunity assessment, modelling, pilot measurement and continuous improvement.
What You'll Do:
- Conduct in-store observations, work measurement and time studies to understand frontline processes, including task time, frequency, variation and key operational drivers.
- Use Industrial Engineering and continuous-improvement methods to identify unnecessary work, movement, waiting, handoffs and rework, and help design simpler ways of working for frontline colleagues.
- Build analytical models and "what-if" scenarios to understand the operational and productivity impact of process changes, new technology and future-state ways of working.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to redesign frontline work, considering colleague experience, operational execution, productivity and scalability.
- Develop evidence-based inputs for business cases, including productive capacity, operational impacts and other measurable business outcomes.
- Design and execute measurement approaches for pilots, validating whether new processes and technology deliver the expected improvements in real store environments.
- Analyze pilot results and frontline feedback to refine future-state processes, validate assumptions and identify further opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Partner closely with Labour Management to ensure measurement approaches, methodologies and assumptions align with established Industrial Engineering practices and engineered labour standards.
- Translate complex analysis into clear, practical recommendations that help business and technology leaders prioritize investments based on measurable value.
What You Bring:
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering or a related field.
- 2–4 years of experience applying Industrial Engineering principles in a retail, operational, manufacturing or similar environment.
- Practical experience conducting work measurement, time studies, process analysis and productivity modelling.
- Experience applying Lean, Six Sigma or similar continuous-improvement methodologies.
- Experience with engineered labour standards; MOST certification or experience is considered an asset.
- Strong analytical skills and proficiency with Excel; experience with SQL, Power BI or similar analytical tools is considered an asset.
- Experience developing analytical models or business-case inputs to quantify operational and productivity improvements.
- Experience working cross-functionally to support process improvement, pilots or operational change initiatives.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage effectively with frontline colleagues and business partners.
- Ability and willingness to spend approximately50% of working time in grocery stores across the Greater Toronto Area.
