Senior Backend Engineer

Job Purpose

Designs, builds, and operates production-grade Java microservices on Spring Boot. Owns the full delivery lifecycle: API design, data modelling, messaging, observability, CI/CD, and on-call support. Collaborates closely with Product, QA, and SRE teams to deliver reliable, scalable services. Provides architectural guidance, makes key technical decisions, and mentors other developers. The role involves ensuring best practices, optimizing performance, and aligning technical solutions with business goals while building secure, high-performing distributed systems.

Roles and Responsibilities

·     Design and implement high-performance, scalable microservices using Java 17+ and Spring Boot

·     Own end-to-end API design including versioning, idempotency, error contracts, and OpenAPI specifications

·     Architect microservices following bounded contexts, saga patterns, and proper service decomposition

·     Enforce security best practices including OAuth2, JWT, secure coding, and vulnerability remediation

·     Integrate and manage event-driven systems using Apache Kafka

·     Optimize application performance through JVM tuning, caching strategies, profiling, and latency reduction

·     Optimize database/SQL performance through indexing strategies, query tuning, and EXPLAIN plan analysis

·     Manage and optimize scalable distributed systems in the cloud (AWS)

·     Design and implement serverless solutions (AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions)

·     Utilize scripting languages (Python, Node.js) for tooling, automation, and auxiliary services

·     Participate in on-call rotations and production incident resolution

·     Conduct code reviews and mentor less-experienced engineers

·     Communicate regularly with the engineering manager, QA teams, and other developers regarding progress on the technology roadmap

·     Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, testing, and documentation workflows

·     Drive automation using AI across the software lifecycle — design, development, testing, support, log analysis, and ticket summarization

·     Produce quality code, raising the bar for team performance and speed

·     Write code and tests, build prototypes, resolve issues, and profile and analyze bottlenecks

Required Skills and Qualifications

·     Advanced proficiency in Java 17+ with modern features (records, sealed types, streams, var)

·     Expert-level Spring Boot knowledge (auto-configuration, profiles, configuration properties)

·     Advanced REST API design skills (versioning, idempotency, error contracts, HATEOAS)

·     Strong microservices architecture experience (bounded contexts, sagas, decomposition)

·     Advanced security expertise (OAuth2, JWT, OWASP, secure coding, vulnerability management)

·     Solid understanding of concurrency and threading (Executors, CompletableFuture, locking)

·     Experience with event-driven architectures using Apache Kafka

·     Performance optimization skills (JVM tuning, caching, profiling, latency reduction)

·     Experience with AI security and governance (data privacy, prompt injection awareness, safe AI usage)

Technical Competencies/Skills

·    Core: Java 17+, Spring Boot, Spring Data JPA, Spring Security

·    API: RESTful APIs, OpenAPI/Swagger, API versioning and integration patterns

·    Messaging: Apache Kafka (producers, consumers, schema registry)

·    Data: PostgreSQL, SQL (indexing, EXPLAIN plans, migrations)

·    Caching: Redis (cache-aside, TTL, invalidation) — nice to have

·    Resilience: Resilience4j, circuit breakers, retries, fallbacks, bulkheads

·    DevOps: Docker (multi-stage builds)

·    CI/CD: GitLab CI (pipeline-as-code, security scans)

·    Cloud: AWS or other cloud platforms (compute, IAM, networking, secrets management)

·    Testing: JUnit 5, Mockito (unit tests, slice tests, parameterized tests)

·    Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, structured logging

·    AI Tools: GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q, prompt engineering, LLM API integration, AI-augmented testing

·     Strong analytical and problem-solving aptitude

Education

·     BS in Engineering or Computer Science

Experience

·     At least 5+ years of professional experience building backend services in Java

·     Proven track record designing and operating production microservices at scale

·     Experience with distributed systems, eventual consistency, and fault tolerance

·     Experience with Agile/Scrum practices (sprint planning, estimation, retrospectives)

Licenses and Certifications

·     AWS or cloud platform certification (preferred, not mandatory)
