About the Role

Do you love science but feel that a career at the bench isn’t enough to sate your desire to learn more about scientific research? Do you enjoy reading papers outside your chosen area of research? If the answer is ‘yes’ to any or all these questions, you could be the person we’re looking for to join the Nature Portfolio editorial team. To help us build on the success of the portfolio, we’re seeking an editor with experience in geophysics who has a critical eye, a deep understanding of their subject and interests beyond, and who can think on their feet.​ Knowledge of seismology, tectonics, geodynamics, and natural hazards would be desirable as would interests in glaciology and geomorphology.

Nature Geoscience is a monthly online and print journal that publishes the very best research from across the Earth and planetary sciences. The aim of this highly selective title is to understand Earth's history and its future evolution through publication of primary research, synthesis, news and opinion-type articles from across the broad spectrum of geosciences, encompassing field work, modelling and theoretical studies.

The location(s) strategy supports team structure and aligns business needs. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manuscript Assessment and Critical Scientific Evaluation -Handling original research papers and working closely with editor teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
  • Decision Quality -Making well-reasoned editorial decisions on submitted manuscripts in the light of expert advice.
  • Scientific Comprehension -Contributing to content and strategy in this area atNature Geoscience
  • Scientific & Academic Writing -Commissioning, editing content such as Reviews, or writing editorials.
  • Liaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio and with experts in the international scientific community –Collaboration,Communicates Effectively.
  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

Essential

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a field related to geophysics.
  • A thorough understanding of recent trends and developments in the field is essential.
  • A passion for science and a thirst to learn more. You must be able to demonstrate the breadth of your interest in scientific research, both within and beyond your specialty.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
  • The ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research submitted to the journal from different areas of this discipline.
  • Be eager to travel and meet scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish.

Desirable

  • Additional research experience valuable but not needed.
  • Editorial experience is not required, although applicants with editorial experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for Senior Editor positions.

The successful candidates will report to the Chief Editor of the journal.

This demanding and intellectually stimulating role is offered in London/Milano/Pune but we are open to applications from internal candidates from other editorial offices.

Applications must include:

  • A briefcover letter(one page) explaining your interest in the role, relevant experience, preferred office location, salary expectations, and current notice period. 
  • A CV detailing your relevant skills and experience, employment history, education, and any achievements demonstrating your suitability for the position.
  • A concise discussion(maximum 500 words) of a 2026 research article that was not published inNature Geoscience. The article should excite you and reflect topics relevant to the advertised role. Your discussion should include:
    • A brief summary of the article and its main findings
    • Relevant context from the broader scientific literature
    • Discussion of whether this article could have been a good fit for publication inNature Geoscience, taking into consideration the aims and scope of the journal.

For Milan, Italy positions only:

  • Associate Editor: Minimum salary €41,500

  • Senior Editor: Minimum salary €55,000
