Historic New England is looking for a smart, curious, energetic marketing leader who sees possibilities everywhere.

We're an organization with extraordinary stories to tell, fascinating places to explore, and important work happening across preservation, culture, education, design, and community life. We're looking for someone who can recognize the opportunities in that work and find creative, effective ways to connect it with audiences across New England and beyond.

You don't need to be a history expert. You do need to be naturally curious, interested in people and ideas, and excited by the challenge of making unfamiliar subjects relevant and compelling.

The Director of Marketing will bring strong marketing expertise, fresh thinking, and a hands-on approach to leading our small but mighty team. Working closely with the Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships, the Director will help shape and execute marketing strategies, identify opportunities to amplify our work, strengthen our brand, and grow our audiences.

This is a role for someone who enjoys both thinking and doing, knows how to build a campaign and measure its success, and can navigate a complex organization with confidence, collaboration, and good humor.

Key Responsibilities

· Develop and execute marketing strategies that advance Historic New England's mission, grow audiences, increase engagement, and support organizational goals.

· Identify creative opportunities to amplify Historic New England's programs, collections, research, expertise, and stories, extending their reach and impact through effective marketing, content distribution, and partnerships.

· Lead integrated marketing campaigns, applying audience research, sound marketing principles, creative thinking, and performance data to achieve measurable results.

· Lead, mentor, and support a small but mighty marketing team, establishing clear priorities, encouraging collaboration, and creating an environment where people can do their best work.

· Work across departments and properties to understand priorities, build productive relationships, and translate ideas into focused, effective marketing initiatives.

· Guide digital and traditional marketing efforts, identifying new opportunities, evaluating emerging approaches, and engaging specialized resources when needed.

· Oversee day-to-day marketing operations, budgets, projects, vendors, and external partners, ensuring work is well coordinated and delivered effectively.

· Partner with the Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Partnerships to implement and strengthen Historic New England's brand and institutional marketing strategy.

· Establish meaningful performance measures, evaluate results, and continually improve marketing effectiveness and the use of resources.

What We're Looking For

· At least 7–10 years of progressive marketing experience, including demonstrated success leading integrated marketing campaigns and managing people.

· A strong foundation in marketing strategy, audience development, segmentation, brand management, and performance measurement.

· Broad understanding of digital and traditional marketing, with the judgment to select effective approaches, direct specialized resources, and evaluate results.

· A proven ability to lead and motivate teams, manage competing priorities, and move projects forward.

· Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate research, data, and insights into practical marketing decisions.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the confidence and diplomacy to work effectively across a complex organization.

· Creativity, initiative, sound judgment, and a willingness to challenge assumptions and explore new ideas.

· A hands-on, solutions-oriented approach and the ability to move comfortably between big-picture thinking and day-to-day execution.

· Intellectual curiosity, an interest in learning, and an instinct for finding compelling stories and opportunities in unexpected places.

· Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, business, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Experience in museums, preservation, cultural organizations, or nonprofits is welcome but not required. We're interested in candidates who bring strong marketing expertise, fresh perspectives, and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.
