The City of Tomball will be accepting applications for a Heavy Equipment Operator/Crew Leader. This role will provide immediate supervision. Technical and functional supervision may be provided by the Streets, Parks and Drainage Superintendent and the Public Works Director. Supervises Streets and Parks servicemen and Summer Laborers

GENERAL SUMMARY
Under supervision, perform work involving the operation of heavy motorized equipment for maintenance and/or new construction relative to streets, drainage, sanitation, facilities, and rights-of-way as per issued instructions. Perform general labor work or repair for streets, rights-of-way, and drainage projects to maximize productivity, efficiency and cost, effectiveness, and safety. Participate in the cleaning and servicing of equipment utilized. Positions in this class perform physical labor in construction, maintenance and landscaping assignments. Work is closely supervised and performed according to established procedures or specific oral or written instruction. Generally, work is observed and reviewed both during its performance and upon completion. Changes in procedures or exception to rules are explained in detail as they arise.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individual(s) assigned to this position. - Perform the function of operator of heavy-duty equipment, i.e., street sweeper, backhoe, front-end loader and grade-all.
- Set and clear culverts, cut ditches and load debris.
- Perform roll-off and dump truck loads, dress-up work for Utility Department, limestone and black top patching, mowing with slope mowers.
- Responsible for the safety, methods and results of carrying out work orders.
- May work independently in the performance of regular work duties or may lead work activities of serviceman and summer laborers.
- Follow safe work practices and observe safety rules and precautions.
- Repair signs.
- Set up and take down traffic cones and barricades to channel traffic and/or for special events.
- Respond to emergency repair requests and work orders.
- Read maps, blueprints, diagrams and grade stakes.
- Repair and/or report vandalism, damage or major maintenance requirements.
- Operate the backhoe, bobcat, aerial truck, boom truck, forklift and other equipment related to the work.
- Inspect, clean, lubricate and perform minor servicing and repair of tools and heavy equipment.
- Service equipment with fuel, oil, water and grease on a daily basis.
- Remove unwanted trees, stumps and roots, and limbs.
- Inspect, clean and perform basic repair of irrigation systems, trench excavation, backfill work, dig ditches, trenches and post holes.
- Clean ponds and creeks.
- Measure, mark off and paint traffic markings on streets and curbs such as direction arrows, lane marking, crosswalks, disabled parking and other road or field markings.
- Clean and maintain curbs, gutters, sidewalks and drains.
- Remove bumper blocks, pavement markers, buttons and reflectors.
- Perform concrete, asphalt, and pavement repairs by filling potholes and cutting out damaged sections of streets.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Considerable knowledge of operating characteristics, methods, techniques, procedures and maintenance of machines and equipment operated.
- Knowledge of uses and purposes of a wide variety of general construction repairs, heavy-duty tools and their maintenance.
- Knowledge of safe work practices, including safety precautions for operation power, working in traffic and under hazardous conditions.
- Knowledge of existing City ordinances, laws and regulations governing construction.
- Knowledge of geographic layout of the City and able to read blueprints and City maps.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Work is performed in an outdoor environment.
- May be subject to repetitive motion and heavy manual labor such as painting, digging, building concrete forms, repairing asphalt, transporting, delivering and picking up debris, or other required equipment.
- Daily physical labor that includes extended periods of sitting, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, entering enclosed spaces, climbing ladders, lifting heavy equipment, digging potholes, swinging a sledgehammer, driving a dump truck, operating other equipment, and performing other similar physically exerting activities on a daily basis.
- May be exposed to moving traffic, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, fumes, heights, confined spaces, trenches, air and water-borne pathogens, body fluids, infectious diseases, rodents and insects.
- Must be able to lift up to 85 pounds.
SALARY:
- Hiring range - $59,336- $62,303 ($28.53 - $29.96)
- Salary range - $59,336 - $84,258
**Salary is dependent on qualifications and certifications**
Qualifications
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 5 years in basic operation and maintenance of light and heavy-duty equipment.
- Class C Texas motor vehicle operator's license. Possession and proof of good driving record as evidence by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two years duration.
- CDL with A or B rating.
