About Asphalt Green

Asphalt Green is a nonprofit organization that transforms lives and builds community through sports, fitness, and play for all.

Each year, Asphalt Green serves thousands of New Yorkers through sports, aquatics, fitness, camps, and community programs that promote health, personal growth, and lifelong participation in physical activity. Across three campuses and numerous community partnerships, Asphalt Green is committed to providing high-quality programs that are inclusive, accessible, and rooted in excellence.

Asphalt Green believes that access to movement, sport, and wellness can change lives. Our work helps young people develop confidence, resilience, leadership skills, and healthy habits that extend far beyond the playing field.

About the Role

The Haunted Maze Lead supports the planning, design, construction, preparation, and execution of Asphalt Green’s Haunted Maze for Asphalt Screams, our seasonal Halloween event.

This is a hands-on, creative project role for someone who enjoys bringing an idea from concept to execution.

The Haunted Maze Lead works both independently and collaboratively to develop the Maze concept, create plans and timelines, prepare materials, decorate the physical space, support actor training, and help ensure the Maze is ready for guests by the event deadline.

This position works closely with the Event Manager and Operations team throughout the project. The Haunted Maze Lead is responsible for communicating support needs in advance so appropriate staff and resources can be coordinated.

Why This Role Matters

The Haunted Maze is a major experiential component of Asphalt Screams and requires thoughtful planning, organization, creativity, and coordination to bring it to life safely and on time.

The Haunted Maze Lead helps translate the event concept into a physical guest experience by connecting creative design with practical execution.

From the original storyline and blueprint through rehearsals and event day, this role helps ensure the Maze is engaging, cohesive, and ready for participants.

  • Decorate Maze walls and designated Maze rooms.

  • Paint, prepare, and install creative elements.

  • Move equipment and materials as needed.

  • Work with Asphalt Green staff to ensure walls and physical structures are assembled according to the established plan.

  • Add final creative details and visual elements as the project progresses.

Event Preparation and Actor Training

  • Prepare the Maze for live event execution.

  • Train actors on the Maze concept, flow, and expected experience.

  • Help establish how performers should interact with the environment and support the storyline.

  • Coordinate final touches before rehearsals.

  • Participate in technology testing and event rehearsals.

  • Identify last-minute issues and communicate needs to the Event Manager.

Project Coordination and Communication

  • Work collaboratively with the Event Manager, Operations, Engineering, and other Asphalt Green departments.

  • Clearly communicate when additional assistance, staffing, materials, or operational support is needed.

  • Help keep the project aligned with the established timeline.

  • Coordinate work across the different stages of Maze development.

  • Notify the Event Manager in advance if project needs are expected to exceed the approved hour allocation.

  • Maintain strong communication throughout planning, build, rehearsals, and event execution.

Event Execution and Completion

  • Work during Asphalt Screams to support and execute the Haunted Maze.

  • Ensure the Maze is prepared and operational for event guests.

  • Support final adjustments during event execution as needed.

  • Support coordination with the Event Manager and Operations as the project transitions into breakdown.

  • Help ensure the project is completed by the required deadline.
