Position Summary 

Under the direction of the Guardian Program Manager, the Guardian Program Coordinator is responsible for supporting the operational delivery of environmental stewardship field work within Musqueam’s Traditional Territory. The Guardian Coordinator will oversee scheduling, training and equipment requirements for Guardian participation in projects that protect, enhance, restore and increase Musqueam presence on its lands and waters. The Guardian Program Coordinator will also support with developing new environmental initiatives and activities for Guardian staff. As part of their work, the Guardian Program Coordinator will establish and maintain liaison with a wide variety of internal and external contacts. This is a two-year term position. 

Roles & Responsibilities 

  • Coordinate scheduling for the Guardians.
  • Lead the procurement, maintenance and the intra-departmental sharing of equipment, including laboratory, field, and monitoring equipment
  • Develop workplans for equipment maintenance schedules.
  • Coordinate implementation and operational delivery of environment and stewardship plans and projects (workplans, strategies, etc.).
  • Identify training and equipment needs for Guardians to ensure their safety in the field.
  • Establish communications and coordinate between internal and external parties with respect to field work.
  • Support the continual development of the Guardian program through implementation of initiatives and work activities. Reviews, analyses, and prepares summaries, presentations, and graphical representations of proposals and reports.
  • Archive and manage field reports from Guardians to support critical decision-making processes.
  • Coordinate with other departmental staff (e.g. Analysts, Coordinators, Program Managers, and Interns) on various projects and plans.
  • Organize community engagement sessions, including preparing presentation materials and newsletters.
  • Assists management in preparing briefing notes, internal/external reports, summaries, discussion papers, factsheets, and other support related material.
  • Leads or participates in meetings related to large projects in order to coordinate information for multiple departments across the organization.
  • Other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

  • Completion of a Post-secondary degree in biology, natural resource management or related field and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in environmental and First Nations issues, environmental policy, broad-level program management, experience within a local government or First Nations organization; or an equivalent combination of education, skills and experience.
  • Proven experience working in and with environmental legislation, regulations and policies preferred; experience working with committee and/or Council structures. 
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver environmental fieldwork safely and effectively while following established safety policies, procedures and protocols. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, persuasion, and consensus-building skills with the ability to work under pressure and independently within a team environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain successful and effective relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and handle shifting priorities to produce results within deadlines. 
  • Cultural competency and sensitivity towards MIBs cultural traditions with the ability to use sound judgment and diplomacy in high stress/conflict situations. 
  • Advanced skills in MS Office software, Adobe Acrobat. 
  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality at all times. 
  • Criminal record check. 
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License. 

Working Conditions 

  • Work is performed in an office environment and may include offsite activities at assigned worksites. 
  • Some evenings, early mornings and weekends may be required.
