JOB OVERVIEW The Groups Pastor serves as the primary strategic leader for Community Groups at Preston Trail, translating the church’s discipleship vision into a clear strategy that moves people into meaningful biblical community and along the discipleship pathway.
This role leads, develops, and holds accountable the Groups staff team; establishes clear priorities, systems, and measurable outcomes; and serves as the primary vision carrier for Groups. The Groups Pastor leads through the team, equipping and holding them accountable to develop, shepherd, and care for Community Group leaders within their ministry areas.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and execute the vision and strategy for Community Groups in alignment with the direction of the Discipleship Pastor.
- Serve as the primary vision carrier for Community Groups, creating consistent vision and language across staff, leaders, and the church body.
- Lead, manage, develop, and hold accountable the Groups staff team, creating clarity around priorities, ownership, measurable outcomes, and follow-through.
- Equip and hold the Groups staff team accountable to recruit, train, develop, shepherd, care for, and multiply healthy Community Group leaders within their respective ministry areas.
- Build and oversee the systems, leadership pipeline, coaching structure, and development strategy necessary for healthy leaders and multiplying groups.
- Develop and execute strategies that move people into Community Groups and along the discipleship pathway, identifying and removing barriers to engagement and continued growth.
- Establish and monitor measurable goals for group participation, leader development, group health, retention, multiplication, and movement through the discipleship pathway.
- Use data, stories, and ministry feedback to evaluate effectiveness, identify opportunities, and make strategic adjustments.
- Develop strategies that increase awareness of, engagement in, and commitment to biblical community at Preston Trail.
- Set the strategy and direction for Groups gatherings, events, and trainings, including their purpose, content, key messages, speakers, calls to action, and desired next steps, while empowering the appropriate ministry pastor or team to own planning and execution.
- Serve as the primary visible leader and vision carrier at key Groups environments, including leader trainings and strategic Men’s and Women’s gatherings.
- Ensure leader trainings equip leaders with the vision, expectations, skills, and practices needed to lead healthy biblical community.
- Evaluate Groups gatherings and trainings based on their effectiveness in developing leaders, creating biblical community, and moving people along the discipleship pathway.
- Identify and develop communicators, trainers, coaches, and leaders who can effectively carry the Groups vision throughout the ministry.
- Partner with ministries across the church for integration and alignment, including Next Gen, Creative, Care, Go, and other Discipleship ministries.
- Lead with initiative, energy, ownership, and strategic thinking, proactively identifying opportunities, solving problems, and moving the ministry forward.
- Oversee the Groups ministry budget and steward resources toward the highest-impact ministry priorities.
- People are consistently moving into meaningful biblical community and along the discipleship pathway.
- The Groups staff team leads with clarity, ownership, accountability, and strong follow-through.
- Groups staff are effectively recruiting, developing, shepherding, and multiplying healthy Community Group leaders.
- Healthy leaders, coaches, apprentices, and Community Groups are consistently being developed and multiplied.
- The Groups vision is clearly understood and consistently carried by staff and leaders.
- Gatherings and trainings are strategic, effective, and create intentional next steps into community and discipleship.
- Ministry decisions are informed by measurable results, including group health, participation, retention, leader development, multiplication, and people movement.

- Proven experience in disciple-making, leadership development, and building healthy ministry systems.
- Strategic thinker who can translate vision into clear plans, priorities, systems, and measurable outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through others, creating ownership and accountability without becoming the primary executor of every ministry initiative.
- Characterized as a team-builder, recruiter, equipper, and developer of leaders.
- Strong communicator and vision-caster who is comfortable leading trainings, gatherings, and ministry environments.
- Able to think strategically about ministry environments, content, communication, and next steps while empowering others to execute effectively.
- Possesses a high level of spiritual maturity and emotional intelligence.
- Demonstrates initiative, ownership, strong follow-through, creative problem-solving, and a proactive approach to leadership.
- Comfortable using data, metrics, stories, and feedback to evaluate ministry effectiveness and drive improvement.
- Able to work some evenings and weekends in support of Groups ministry rhythms, trainings, and strategic gatherings.
- College degree preferred.
