Appointment Type and Details

The position is a tenure-line faculty appointment in the Department of English at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of August 15, 2027. The successful candidate will serve as the inaugural Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric in a four-year renewable administrative appointment. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in rhetoric and composition, writing studies, or a closely related field and currently hold the rank of Associate Professor or Professor.

Position Responsibilities

Loyola Marymount University invites applications for an Associate or Full Professor of English to serve as the inaugural Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. The Director will hold a tenure-line appointment in the Department of English and provide academic and administrative leadership for the university’s Program in Writing and Rhetoric. The program represents the next step in LMU’s continued development of writing and rhetorical education, withFirst-Year Seminar and Rhetorical Arts serving as foundational first-year courses.

In collaboration with appropriate faculty and university governance bodies, the Director will lead the continued development of writing and rhetorical education at LMU, as well as curricular development and assessment for Rhetorical Arts 1000 and the writing-instructor component ofFirst-Year Seminar. The Director will help guide and strengthen university approaches to writing instruction, including responses to generative AI; mentor and support non-tenure-line faculty; foster community and faculty professional development; and collaborate with other units on writing curricula that support student success.

The Director will receive substantial course release appropriate to the administrative responsibilities of the position and will continue to teach regularly in the candidate’s areas of expertise and/or in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. Faculty responsibilities also include maintaining an active program of scholarship, teaching and advising undergraduate students, and contributing to department and university service.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in rhetoric and composition, writing studies, or a closely related field, currently hold the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, have a record of relevant scholarship and teaching commensurate with appointment at that rank, and have significant experience in writing program administration. We especially welcome candidates with experience in curricular development and assessment, critical and process-oriented writing pedagogies, faculty mentoring and development, and collaborative leadership across academic units.

Reasonable expected salary starting at $115,000. Hiring salary will be commensurate with job-related qualifications, experience, knowledge, and skills.
