Teaching Assistant – Neurodiversity Support Classroom

Overview:

Georgetown International Academy (GIA) is seeking two committed and compassionate paraeducators to support students with neurodiverse learning profiles, including those on the autism spectrum, within a highly structured and inclusive lower school classroom. These paraeducators will work under the direction and supervision of the Program Coordinator to provide direct academic and behavioral support, facilitate inclusive opportunities, and contribute to the success of each student through consistent implementation of individualized strategies.

This role requires more than traditional classroom assistance; the paraeducator will be an active instructional partner and learner, supporting students in the development of communication, academic, behavioral, and social-emotional skills.

Key Responsibilities:Direct Student Support

- Deliver academic and behavioral instruction to individual students or small groups under the guidance of the Program Coordinator.

- Implement behavior intervention plans and instructional strategies consistently and accurately.

- Collect and record data on student progress toward goals, including behavior, skill development, and learning outcomes.

- Support students in using visual schedules, communication systems, and sensory tools.

Inclusive Opportunities & Social Development

- Supervise and support students during inclusive activities, ensuring accommodations and modifications are in place.

- Help facilitate positive peer interactions and foster understanding of neurodiverse differences within the general education environment.

- Coach peers and model appropriate interaction strategies to promote social engagement and empathy.

Collaboration & Professionalism

- Receive ongoing training and coaching from the Program Coordinator.

- Communicate clearly and consistently with the Program Coordinator regarding student needs and observations.

- Participate in team meetings and contribute to problem-solving conversations.

- Assist with preparation and maintenance of the classroom environment, visuals, and learning materials.

- Maintain student dignity, confidentiality, and safety at all times.

Preferred Qualifications:

- High school diploma required; college coursework or degree in education, psychology, or a related field preferred.

- Experience working with children with autism or other neurodevelopmental differences strongly preferred.

- Willingness to receive ongoing training and apply strategies consistently.

- Strong communication skills, patience, and a collaborative mindset.

- Ability to follow behavior plans and reinforce learning with clarity and positivity.

- Commitment to inclusive education and a belief in the potential of every student.
