Paralegal — Legal Research & Curriculum Development

Position Summary 

We are looking for a dedicated and meticulous paralegal to work the U.S. LawShield Institute. This role is responsible for conducting thorough legal research and transforming complex legal information into accurate, clear, and usable written materials. This position plays a critical role in supporting the organization’s legal education, curriculum development, publications, and ongoing monitoring of federal and state laws. 

The ideal candidate is an exceptionally strong researcher and writer who can independently identify authoritative legal sources, analyze statutes and regulations, review case law, and communicate legal concepts clearly to both legal and non-legal audiences. 

This potion requires strong attention to detail, sound judgement, excellent written communication skills, and the ability to distinguish authoritative legal sources from secondary or unreliable information. 

Legal Research & Analysis

• Conduct comprehensive legal research involving federal, state, and local laws, regulations, statutes, administrative rules, and case law. 
• Research and monitor changes to firearms laws, self-defense laws, constitutional issues, civil liability, criminal laws, and other areas relevant to the organization’s education mission. 
• Identify, review, and analyze primary legal authorities, including statutes, regulations, court opinions, attorney general opinions, legislative materials, and official government resources. 
• Track proposed and enacted legislation and identify changes that may affect existing education materials and law databases.
• Research historical and current versions of statutes and regulations to identify changes and effective dates. 
• Verify legal information against authoritative sources before publication or inclusion in education materials. 
• Prepare research summaries, legal issue briefs, legislative summaries, and other internal research documents. 
• Identify legal questions requiring additional review by attorneys or other subject matter experts. 

Legal & Legislative Monitoring

• Draft and revise legal and education content based on completed research. 
• Prepare concise summaries of statutes, regulations, court decisions, and other legal authorities. 
• Draft state-specific legal updates, legislative summaries, legal articles, FAQs, educational materials, and curriculum content. 
• Translate complex legal concepts into clear, accurate language that can be understood by instructors, students, and members of the general public. 
• Assist with drafting and updating state law guides, instructor resources, student materials, publications, presentations, and other educational products. 
• Draft research memoranda and supporting documentation for attorney review. 
• Edit existing legal content for accuracy, clarity, consistency, grammar, and proper citation. 
• Maintain consistency in terminology, legal definitions, citations, formatting, and organizational writing standards. 

Quality Control

• Fac-check legal content and verify citations and source materials

• Maintain a high standard of accuracy and consistency across all legal and educational materials.

• Identify discrepancies between published materials and current law and promptly escalate issues. 

• Maintain detailed research notes and source documentation so that legal conclusions and written content can be traced back to authoritative sources. 

• Perform final proofreading and quality-control reviews of assigned materials. 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies, Legal Studies, Criminal Justice, Political Science, or a related field. 
• 3+ years of paralegal, legal research, legal writing, compliance, legislative research, or closely related experience. 
• Demonstrated ability to conduct sophisticated legal research using primary legal sources. 
• Strong legal writing and editing skills. 
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy. 
• Ability to read and interpret statutes, regulations, and court opinions. 
• Strong organizational and project-management skills.
• Ability to independently research an issue and produce a well-supported written work product. 
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining accuracy. 
• Experience conducting multi-state legal research. 
• Experience researching firearms, self-defense, constitutional, criminal, or civil liability law. 
• Experience with legislative tracking or monitoring state legislative activity. 
• Experience working with legal databases such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, Fastcase, Bloomberg Law, or similar platforms. 
• Experience drafting legal memoranda, research briefs, legal articles, or educational materials. 
• Experience working with attorneys or legal subject-matter experts.
• Experience working with trusts, including reviewing trust documents and supporting trust-related legal matters.
• Experience developing or reviewing legal education or training content.
