Function is building a platform that enables developers and enterprises to run AI inference on-device. Our platform is comprised of a general-purpose Python compiler; along with client SDKs which developers use to run compiled functions in their applications.Learn more.

Internally, the vast majority of our engineering time is spent across three main areas:

  1. Compiler Infrastructure: This is our compiler which translates Python code to native code; then cross-compiles it for desktop, mobile, web, and cloud.

  2. Accelerated Computing: To ensure maximum performance for AI inference, we write and benchmark highly optimized kernels for CPUs, GPUs, and neural processors.

  3. Model Sourcing. Most developers who run AI inference will start with popular open-source models. As such, we compile popular models to host on ourExplore page.

Each of these areas is intertwined with the others, so you will likely spend time across all of them.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain native code generation, implementing Python language features across C++23 and Rust.

  • Design and build pipelines for high-performance native code generation (C++, Rust) to support tensor operations, LLM inference, and other operations required to support popular AI models.

  • Ensure maximum compute utilization by leveraging SIMD and GPGPU instruction sets across Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, WebAssembly, and Windows.

Who You Are

  • You are highly curious about high-performance computing and systems-level programming. Your work speaks for itself.

  • You can write extremely performant, safe, correct C++ and/or Rust code. You can also inspect emitted object code (binutils, Ghidra), and perform detailed benchmarking.

  • You are experienced with platform-specific SIMD and GPGPU offerings including—but not limited to—Vulkan compute, Metal, CUDA, WebGPU, and others.

  • You are experienced with using high-level inference libraries like ONNXRuntime, GGML, MLX, and others.

  • You are an expert in Python.

Why Function

  • You'll have immediate, extensive impact right out of the gate. Everyone pushes to production; everyone talks to customers; everyone influences the design of the platform.

  • In a day of work, you'll get to go from high-level Python code to extremely low-level Assembly code—and will often jump back and forth several times.

  • You will be at the bleeding edge of using LLMs for low-level code generation, a field that has not been explored as much as higher-level codegen.

  • You will be surrounded by incredibly high-agency people. We'll let you cook.
