POSITION OVERVIEW:Â
 Â
The Globe and Mail is looking for a full-time data editor focused on personal finance journalism to join our digital storytelling team. This role will work closely with reporters and editors to build out consumer-focused data projects that empower readers to make informed decisions on everything fromcredit cards towhere to live.Â
 Â
The successful candidate will be part of a growing team that uses data, code and multimedia to produce high-impact journalism for The Globe's audience across all platforms. The team is a multidisciplinary group of developers, data journalists and visual editors. We work collaboratively across all aspects of The Globe's coverage, including long-term investigative projects, breaking news and immersive story formats. In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of The Globe’s most ambitious and innovative work.Â
 Â
We are not prescriptive about tools and technology: editors on the digital storytelling team are journalists first and should be comfortable — and excited — about continually learning new skills and techniques in the service of telling the best story possible. We build on what we learn together as a team, and we value inclusive, accessible design and a supportive, collegial workplace.Â
 Â
RESPONSIBILITIES:Â
- Gather, process, analyze and visualize data to support daily and enterprise personal finance and business journalism.Â
- Collaborate with reporters, editors and visual journalists on data-driven stories, with an emphasis on consumer-focused projects.Â
- Spot check data work done by other team members and journalists in the newsroom.Â
- Build and maintain tools that aid the work of reporters and editors in data reporting.Â
- Act as an ambassador for data literacy in journalism across the newsroom.Â
QUALIFICATIONS:Â
- Strong news judgment with a good sense of how data best serves the story and the reader.Â
- Experience working on data-driven stories and projects in a newsroom, particularly with a business or consumer journalism focus.Â
- Experience with acquiring and maintaining datasets of varying sizes.Â
- Experience with data analysis tools like Excel or Google Sheets and coding languages like Python or R.Â
- Experience visualizing data with a demonstrated understanding of best practices for graphic presentation of information in journalism.Â
- An ability to juggle multiple projects of varying deadlines and sizes.Â
- Additional qualifications that would be an asset in this role:Â
- Experience integrating AI into data work — or an enthusiasm for doing so.Â
- Experience working with APIs.Â
- Experience with database management best practices and relevant AWS services.Â
- Knowledgeable about available business-related datasets.Â
- Familiarity with data visualization libraries.Â
This position is based in the Toronto office and requires a minimum of two days a week in office.
