Finishing Utility

Job Description & Duties:

The Finishing Utility supports the safe and efficient flow of product from the #3 Paper Machine into the Finishing Department. This position helps reduce the workload on the #3 Paper Machine Broke Hustler and Laborer by unloading finished rolls, cutting cores to order specifications, and keeping the finishing department organized and ready for production. The Finishing Utility works closely with the Machine Room and Finishing team to keep production moving and protect product quality. This list is not all-inclusive and additional duties may be assigned based on workload and operational needs.

• Safety & Compliance:
  • Follow all mill safety policies, procedures, and PPE standards.
  • Complete a daily pre-shift inspection sheet for the tug, forklift, clamptruck, or any assigned mobile equipment.
  • Check every roll transport for proper safety equipment and maintain an accurate sign-off log of this confirmation.
  • Operate the core saw only with all guards in place and follow safe cutting practices.
  • Stack and store rolls and cores according to department height and stability guidelines.
  • Keep aisles, walkways, fire equipment, and emergency exits clear at all times.
  • Report hazards, near misses, and equipment damage to the Finishing Supervisor immediately.
• Quality Control & Record-Keeping:
  • Cut cores to exact order size, verifying measurements with a tape measure to confirm core specifications for each production run.
  • Inspect cores before use and set aside any that are crushed, damaged, or wet.
  • Inspect rolls during unloading for damaged ends, wrinkles, wet spots, or other defects, and report issues before rolls are staged.
  • Verify roll tags and labels match the production schedule and customer order.
• Production Support & Equipment Operation:
  • Assess each shift by reading the #3 Paper Machine production log schedule and cutting cores ahead of upcoming runs.
  • Deliver cut cores to the #3 Paper Machine Winder area so they are ready for each set.
  • Unload rolls in the finishing department by moving them from the tug to the lowerator and then to the conveyor for roll wrapping.
  • Support the #3 Paper Machine crew during heavy production, roll changes, and startups as directed.
  • Operate the tug, core saw, and other finishing equipment as trained and authorized.
• Maintenance & Housekeeping:
  • Organize the finishing department, including core storage, roll staging areas, and supplies.
  • Monitor core and supply inventory and notify the Finishing Supervisor when stock is running low.
  • Keep the core saw clear of debris and report blade wear or equipment malfunctions.
  • Charge the tug as needed to keep it ready for roll transport.
  • Keep the finishing department clean by sweeping and removing scrap paper, core scrap, and waste to proper recycling areas.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Competencies:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment preferred.
• Experience with forklift or tug operation preferred.
• Ability to read production schedules and take accurate measurements with a tape measure.
• Ability to follow safety protocols and work effectively in a fast-paced production environment.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Reliable team player with a positive and proactive work ethic.

Work Environment:

• Work in a production facility exposed to heat, humidity, and dust.
• Exposure to loud noise, moving machinery, cutting equipment, and mobile equipment traffic.
• Requires standing, walking, bending, and operating equipment for extended periods.
• Requires lifting, pushing, and pulling materials up to 50 lbs.
• Shift work required, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
