About the role
Marinas migrating from a legacy system, or setting up our accounting integration for the first time, ask hard questions. How should prepaid storage contracts hit deferred revenue? How do Stripe payouts reconcile to gross revenue? Where do deposits, credits, tips, fuel and sales tax land in the ledger? What are the opening balances at cutover?
As more marinas run their full financial operation on Dockwa, the questions are getting deeper and more varied. This role brings dedicated accounting expertise to the team, owns the answer, and gives everyone a shared standard to build on.
Core responsibilities
- The Dockwa Accounting Standard. You will write and maintain our opinionated way a customer's books are set up on Dockwa. This includes chart of accounts templates for each ledger we integrate with, starting with QuickBooks Online, NetSuite, and Sage, revenue recognition for prepaid and seasonal contracts, deposits and boater ledger balances, refunds and credits, sales tax, fuel cost of goods, tips, and payout reconciliation against Stripe. You also own the accounting content of our customer-facing integration documentation.
- Complex migrations and expert escalation. Support and implementation handle standard accounting activations against the standard you write. You run the financial cutover for multi-location and enterprise groups and for the most complex marinas leaving their prior bookkeeping setup. On those accounts, opening balances, open receivables, in-flight contracts and the first reconciled month-end close on Dockwa are yours. When an accounting or integration question needs deeper expertise, it comes to you: you investigate, fix it or take it to engineering, and close the loop with the marina. You are the single escalation point for accounting-structure questions across the company.
- The line between configuration and advice. Dockwa tells a marina how Dockwa posts. The marina's accountant decides whether that is right for their books. You will define that boundary and you will train the team to hold it. Our team's role is to explain how Dockwa works, not to give tax or GAAP advice. When a marina needs that advice, we point them to accountants who know marinas and know Dockwa, and you will build that referral list.
- The paid implementation offering. You will define, price and deliver a Financial Setup package alongside Sales and Customer Success. You own its scope, its margin and the customer's experience of it.
- Team certification. You will build the training and certification that lets customer success and onboarding staff handle standard setups without you, and know exactly when to escalate.
- The feedback loop to Product. Recurring questions point to defaults, reports and safeguards the product can add. You will deliver a ranked list to the VP of Product each quarter. Part of your job is to make the human part of this work smaller over time.
What we're looking for
Must have
- Five or more years running or implementing the books for a multi-location operating business: hospitality, self-storage, campgrounds, marinas, boatyards, property management or similar.
- You have closed the month for a business with deposits, prepaid contracts and card processing.
- Deep, hands-on QuickBooks Online expertise, plus working knowledge of Sage or NetSuite.
- Direct experience with payment processor reconciliation, ideally Stripe. You understand the difference between gross revenue, net payout and processing fees, and you can explain it to someone who does not.
- You have implemented, or been implemented onto, a vertical software platform with an accounting sync.
- You write clearly. Much of your output is documentation, templates and plain-language explanations for non-accountants.
Strong signals
- You have been a controller or head of finance at an operation, then moved to the software side. Or the reverse.
- You have kept the books for a group that owns several locations, with multi-entity reporting.
- You have built training or certification for a support or delivery team.
About Dockwa
Dockwa is reshaping the $60+ billion marine industry. After 12 years of building trust with marina operators and boaters, we have achieved something rare: category-defining position in a fragmented industry ready for transformation.
The marina industry is experiencing a generational shift. Private equity consolidation is accelerating. Operators face pressure to run marinas like real businesses, not lifestyle assets. This creates the opportunity to become the default operating layer for an industry that has never had one.
