Title or Role: EH&S Specialist (Bi-Lingual)
Compensation: Up to $70 commensurate with experience
Location:Raleigh/Durham Area | Onsite
Length of Contract:Up to 1 year
Position Description:
Our client is seeking an experienced bi-lingual EH&S specialist to help drive safety efforts in the field for a biotech manufacturing construction site. This individual will collaborate with multiple teams, take responsibility for reviewing and approving daily job plans, and ensuring that safety remains the number one goal. You will be responsible for hazard identification, mitigation, enforcement and accountability of craft in the field and driving assurance that all tasks are performed safely in strict enforcement of company & regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will lead by example, acting as a safety coach to individuals and teams, providing guidance on correct safety measures rather than solely enforcing rules, promoting a positive safety culture, with all activities being conducted with the highest degree of professionalism.
Responsibilities:
- Pre-Work Planning & Approval: Review and approve daily job plans and related safety measures. Ensure that all high-risk activities are mapped out with robust Safe Plans of Action (SPAs) before commencement.
- Job Hazard Analysis (JHA): Conduct comprehensive JHAs to identify and correct potential hazards, such as fall protection deficiencies, improper scaffolding, trenching, high-ceiling work, electrical, dry wall, etc.
- Field Safety Oversight: Provide real-time safety coaching, monitoring teams to ensure compliance, and adherence to safety protocols during all stages of construction and site-start-up activities.
- Pre-Startup and Completion (Later Phases)
- Process Hazard Analysis (PHA): Under the direction of the Project Safety Engineer, Support PHAs for field equipment and systems
- Mechanical Completion: Collaborate with engineering and construction teams to verify that all systems and equipment are installed correctly and are safe for initial testing
- Lead or actively participate in the PSSR process to ensure that new facilities have all necessary safety, operational, and emergency procedures in place before the introduction of hazardous substances.
- Incident Reporting & Documentation: Actively participate in incident and near-miss investigations to determine the root cause.
- Ensure that the root cause is investigated thoroughly and CAPAs are authored with firm completion dates.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of safety inspections, training, incidence and corrective actions.
- Enforcement & Accountability: Work closely with site management, subcontractors and related personnel to ensure that "safety first " is the priority.
- Transition Support: Assist in the documentation of any final safety inspections to satisfy regulatory requirements for the Certificate of Occupancy.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in construction EH&S, specifically in pharma/medtech, industrial or commercial environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills, bi-lingual (English/Spanish), ability to influence, and conflict resolution skills to enforce safety when deadlines are tight
- Demonstrated expertise in conducting JHAs and developing detailed SPAs for complex tasks.
- Strong understanding of OSHA regulations and construction-related safety standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse trades, contractors, and facility project managers, i.e., a collaborative coach who builds consensus but remains firm when enforcing safety requirements of the job site.
- Proven track record of safety enforcement in fast-paced, high-pressure environment as the deadline approaches.
- Overall experience working in a dynamic construction environment is highly sought after.
Education & Certifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental Engineering, or related technical field
- OSHA Construction 30: Safety professionals at a minimum shall have and maintain OSHA Construction 30.
- Competent Person Certification: Fall Protection, Confined Spaces, & Scaffolding
- Additional Certs: Highly sought after additional certs to include but not limited to; ASP, CSP, CHST, etc.
