Facilities Manager – Hemel HempsteadÂ
Â
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:30am–5:00pmÂ
Working arrangement: Fully onsiteÂ
Looking for a Facilities Manager role where you can genuinely take ownership of a site, make improvements happen and see the impact of your work?Â
At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our work has a purpose: enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer. In Hemel Hempstead, we’re looking for a rounded, proactive Facilities Manager who can create and maintain the high-quality operating environment that enables our people to deliver that mission. Our Hemel Hempstead facility is a client fronting demonstration Laboratory which is critical in our UK and EMEA operationsÂ
This isn’t a role where you will sit above a large engineering team or manage an extensive multi-site portfolio. It’s a hands-on, site-focused leadership opportunity for someone who enjoys being close to the operation, building relationships, establishing and running site events and taking ownership when something needs to happen. The position is dedicated to our approximately 3,000m² Hemel Hempstead site, with four direct reports across warehouse and reception. Â
What will you do?Â
You will take responsibility for ensuring the effective operation of the site’s building systems, infrastructure and services, combining strategic planning with day-to-day operational leadership.Â
You will oversee critical facility systems and work closely with contracted services partners such as security, janitorial and grounds maintenance. Although you won’t be expected to personally fix technical systems, you will need the knowledge and confidence to understand issues, coordinate the right contractors and take ownership through to resolution. Preventative maintenance will be particularly important – looking after the site’s assets and addressing risks before they become failures. Â
You will also:Â
- Develop and implement preventive maintenance programmes and manage operational budgets.Â
- Coordinate facility modifications, space planning and capital improvements.Â
- Build strong relationships with vendors, contractors and service providers.Â
- Ensure compliance with quality, safety and regulatory requirements.Â
- Champion workplace safety, sustainability and emergency preparedness.Â
- Work closely with site leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to identify and deliver continuous improvement.Â
- Take ownership when facilities issues arise, coordinating the response, making the area safe and ensuring issues are resolved effectively.Â
- Support events agenda, taking initiatives from idea and planning through to onsite coordination and delivery. Â
What are we looking for?Â
We are looking for someone with strong facilities expertise who is equally comfortable with people, stakeholders and operational problem-solving. You will need to be visible and approachable on site, able to build trusted relationships and confident taking ownership rather than relying on a large technical team around you.Â
Requirements:Â
- Advanced degree plus 6 years of experience in facilities management in regulated environmentsÂ
- Preferred Fields of Study: Engineering, Facilities Management, or related technical fieldÂ
- Experience managing facility maintenance programs and contracted servicesÂ
- Project management expertise, including capital project planning and executionÂ
- Leadership abilities and experience managing cross-functional teamsÂ
- Proficiency with CMMS and Microsoft Office applicationsÂ
- Knowledge of GMP, ISO, FDA, OSHA, DSEAR and other relevant regulatory requirementsÂ
- Financial acumen including budget development and managementÂ
- Laboratory Gas Safety Awareness – Essential. The role is responsible for the safe handling, storage and connection of compressed gas cylinders, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and company procedures.Â
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skillsÂ
- Experience with energy management and sustainability initiativesÂ
- Knowledge of construction codes, standards and contract managementÂ
- Experience implementing continuous improvement programsÂ
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Â
Why join Thermo Fisher Scientific?Â
This is an opportunity to take real ownership of a site. You will have the autonomy to identify what needs improving, develop solutions and work with stakeholders and external partners to make those improvements happen.Â
It also offers something beyond the immediate position. The hiring team is keen to support the successful candidate’s continued leadership development, with the potential to explore broader opportunities across Thermo Fisher Scientific in the future. Â
Most importantly, you will be doing it within an organisation whose work has an impact far beyond the workplace itself – helping our customers tackle challenges ranging from protecting the environment and food safety to finding cures for cancer. Â
If you’re a Facilities Manager who enjoys being close to the operation, taking ownership and creating an environment where people can do their best work, we would love to hear from you.Â
