A Day in the Life


We are seeking an experienced, hands-onFacilities Maintenance Technician to support the maintenance, safety, reliability, and day-to-day operation of multiple laboratory facilities. This role requires someone who can independently identify and troubleshoot facility issues, perform repairs within their capabilities, determine when specialized contractor support is needed, coordinate repair and project work, and follow issues through to completion. The successful candidate will understand the operational sensitivities of a laboratory environment and work closely with laboratory leaders to minimize disruption to production, safety, sample integrity, and client commitments. This position requires strong self-management and availability for after-hours or weekend response when necessary.  This position is 100% onsite M-F.


The compensation range for this role is$25 to $45 / hour, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.


Base Office: Orange, CA Laboratory

Schedule: Onsite Monday - Friday


To thrive in this role, you'll be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:

  • Facility Operations & Maintenance:  Perform hands-on facility maintenance, troubleshooting, and basic repairs involving HVAC, plumbing, electrical/lighting, roofing, water systems, building infrastructure, and general facility needs. Identify, assess and fix the problem.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform and track preventive maintenance activities to improve equipment and facility reliability, minimize downtime, and prevent recurring problems.
  • Projects & Installations : Support facility repairs, installations, renovations, and capital projects through hands-on execution, quote coordination, scheduling, contractor coordination, and follow-through.
  • Safety & Compliance: Support facility safety, inspections, audit corrective actions, and regulatory compliance; identify unsafe facility conditions and ensure corrective actions are completed
  • Vendor Coordination: Serve as the primary contact for facility vendors, contractors, inspections, repairs, and service agreements. Obtain and compare quotes, coordinate vendors and specialized contractors when needed, monitor work quality and progress, and follow repairs through verified completion
  • Laboratory Operations Coordination -Coordinate maintenance, repairs, construction activities, and utility interruptions with laboratory leadership to minimize impacts to production, contamination control, sample integrity, safety, and client commitments.
  • Facility Systems & Documentation: Maintain preventive maintenance records, equipment information, service history, permits, warranties, vendor information, facility drawings, and access/security systems
  • Emergency Response & Travel :Respond to urgent facility issues, including after-hours emergencies when required, and provide facility support to other locations as needed.


Your Expertise and Skills

  • Experience: 3-5+ years of hands-on facilities maintenance, building operations, mechanical systems, or related technical experience. Experience supporting laboratory, manufacturing, or other regulated production environments strongly preferred.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical/trade training or related degree preferred.
  • Core Trades:
    • Strong hands-on knowledge of commercial HVAC, controls, filtration, plumbing, electrical/lighting, water systems, and general building maintenance.
    • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot facility and mechanical problems, perform appropriate repairs independently, and recognize when licensed or specialized contractor support is required.
    • General carpentry, handyman, roofing, plumbing and building repair skills. Experience with laboratory utility systems, including ultrapure water, air, vacuum, or similar systems preferred.
  • General Skills:
    • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate issues, identify root causes, evaluate options, and implement practical solutions.
    • Demonstrated persistence and follow-through, with the ability to manage multiple open facility issues and drive each through completion.
    • Ability to work independently, prioritize work, and make sound decisions without requiring continuous direction.
    • Organized and detail-oriented with appropriate attention to safety, documentation, preventive maintenance, and regulatory requirements.
    • Strong communication skills for coordinating work with laboratory leaders, vendors, contractors, and employees across multiple locations.
      • Mechanical skills for basic maintenance and troubleshooting.
    • Attention to detail and strong time-management skills
    • Proficient with Microsoft Visio.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Project or comparable project management software preferred.
  • Certifications: Working knowledge of OSHA and facility safety requirements required; relevant trade or technical certifications preferred.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel occasionally to service centers as required.
  • Physical Requirements:  Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and conducting site inspections at both facilities and service centers, including rooftop units.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required

  • Performs work independently and collaboratively with contractors, vendors, supervisors, and employees across the organization.
  • Frequent standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and reaching
  • Ability to work from ladders
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials, equipment, and tools weighing up to 50 lbs independently and heavier loads with assistance or mechanical equipment
