What to Expect

As Tesla's Fabrication Shop Manager on the Self Perform Mechanical Construction team, you own day-to-day production in a self-perform fabrication shop supporting industrial and advanced manufacturing construction programs. You are the general superintendent of the shop. You keep piping and structural steel fabrication moving from material receipt through cutting, fit-up, weld, NDE, coating, and spool or structure release to the field. 

The Fabrication Project Manager owns budget, schedule, and weekly production reporting. You own the floor. That includes craft leadership, quality of workmanship, and the daily execution required to keep construction off the critical path. If you lead from the shop floor, know piping and structural steel processes, and will not let production stall, this role was built for you. 

What You’ll Do

• Own day-to-day fabrication shop operations from material issue through cutting, fitting, welding, NDE, painting or coating, handling, staging, and completed piping spool and structural steel release 

• Develop and execute daily and weekly production plans to hit project delivery dates and shop throughput targets, coordinating material flow, work orders, cut lists, and shop drawings 

• Lead and develop a self-perform craft workforce including welders, fitters, fabricators, helpers, and support staff, with clear expectations for safety, quality, productivity, and accountability 

• Hire, train, coach, and evaluate craft performance, and plan manpower, shifts, overtime, and skill development as the shop ramps 

• Resolve production constraints in real time, including material shortages, weld repairs, equipment downtime, sequencing conflicts, and workforce gaps, before they affect shop output or field need-by dates 

• Enforce fabrication quality and code compliance across ASME B31.3, Section IX, WPS/PQR, hydro testing, NDE hold points, AISC, AWS D1.1, and project welding requirements, partnering with Quality so work is right the first time 

• Keep material control, consumables, and shop flow tight across cutting tables, fit-up stations, weld bays, inspection hold points, and staged release so production stays continuous 

What You’ll Bring

• 7+ years of experience in industrial piping and/or structural steel fabrication, including at least 5 years in a superintendent or shop management role in industrial, refinery, chemical, process, or advanced manufacturing environments 

• Demonstrated leadership of large self-perform craft teams (typically 20 to 100 personnel) and sustained output under aggressive delivery schedules 

• Working knowledge of piping fabrication processes and codes, including ASME B31.3 / Section IX (or equivalent), AWS welding standards, WPS/PQR application, fit-up tolerances, hydro testing, NDE hold points, and spool release 

• Working knowledge of structural steel fabrication, including AISC, AWS D1.1, shop drawing interpretation, and fitting of beams, columns, connections, and miscellaneous steel 

• Ability to read engineering drawings, isometrics, shop drawings, and weld symbols, and to diagnose and clear shop-floor constraints across material, labor, equipment, and quality 

• Strong communicator who can align craft leads, Quality, Warehousing/Material Control, and the Fabrication Project Manager around daily priorities 

• Hands-on, decisive leader who is present on the floor, sets the pace, and holds the standard for safety, workmanship, and accountability
