Position Title: Cyber Security Specialist

Location: Portsmouth, VA

Compensation: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00

 

Position Summary:

Command Cyber Solutions (CCS) is seeking a Cyber Security Specialist to support the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The Cyber Security Specialist will support cybersecurity policy, threat mitigation and possess deep knowledge and experience with a vast array of IT systems involving end-user, as well as enterprise level networks. The ideal candidate will have experience in cybersecurity tools, network topologies, intrusion detection, PKI, and secured networks. 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for defining, coordinating, monitoring hospital information system security environment, and investigating suspected violations of information security policies.
  • Provide support to client server environment through research, testing, and evaluation of computer security products and procedures to provide a reliable and secure computing environment. Consult with site staff to collect all system-related information necessary to prepare for intrusion detection system installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • Assess site systems for the appropriate network and operating system software version levels and research and recommend appropriate patch levels as required.
  • Demonstrate the operation and management of the intrusion detection system.
  • Review current and future network security designs and recommend secure configurations to appropriate administrators.
  • Monitor corporate network ingress and egress points for potential intrusions or other unsolicited connection attempts.
  • Assist in the development, periodic review, and implementation of IMD security policies, guidelines, and standard as requested by site staff.
  • Design and implement defense-in-depth security procedures that utilize firewalls, host and network- based intrusion detection systems, and other security devices to ensure the highest levels of security are maintained.
  • Determine applicability, system responsibility, and required compliance procedures for DOD IAVA and reports compliance status to command designated reporting agent.
  • Apply oral and written communication skills and time management and analytical skills in daily duties.



     

Education, Certification & Experience Requirements:

Education:

  • High School Diploma
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or engineering (Preferred).

     

Certifications:

  • CompTIA Security+
     
     

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience with information assurance, engineering, or operational support to the DoW, including supporting information operations, cyber operations, system administration, and systems security.
  • 5+ years of experience with a DoW certification and accreditation program, including developing or analyzing security test and evaluation reports.
  • 5+ years of experience delivering continuous monitoring and cybersecurity support for DoW network environments.
     

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • DoD cybersecurity regulations and frameworks including DoD 8500.02, DoD 8510, NIST SP 800-37, NIST SP 800-53/53A, NIST SP 800-30, CNSSI 1253, and related guidance.
  • Cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and mitigation strategies across enterprise and end-user IT systems.
  • Patch management practices, secure network configurations, and defense-in-depth security architecture.
  • Knowledge of information assurance policies, Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs), System Authorization Access Requests (SAAR), and user cybersecurity training requirements.
  • Assessing system configurations, applying patches, and validating compliance with DoD IAVA requirements.
  • Managing intrusion detection system operations and interpreting monitoring data.
  • Using security monitoring tools to track ingress/egress points and detect intrusion attempts.
  • Implement defense-in-depth strategies leveraging firewalls, IDS/IPS, and layered security controls.
  • Ability to investigate and resolve suspected violations of cybersecurity policies while maintaining documentation for audits.
  • Evaluate IA compliance against DoD cybersecurity requirements and develop corrective action plans.
