The EHS Manager partners closely with Operations, Maintenance & Reliability, Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain, and site leadership to identify and eliminate risk, strengthen process safety systems, and drive continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities
Hazard and Risk Assessment & Oversight
- Lead the identification, assessment, prioritization, and mitigation of EHS and process safety risks across the plant.
- Provide technical leadership for hazard assessments, including Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA), job/task risk assessments, and other risk evaluation processes.
- Ensure identified risks are appropriately documented, prioritized, assigned, and driven to effective closure.
- Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Reliability to ensure risk reduction is incorporated into equipment design, operating practices, maintenance strategies, and capital projects.
- Establish a proactive approach to risk management that moves the organization from reactive response toward prevention and risk elimination.
- Provide EHS input and oversight for Management of Change (MOC), pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR), incident investigations, and other high-risk activities.
- Own and continuously improve site EHS, Process Safety Management (PSM), and Total Process Safety (TPS) programs.
- Ensure effective implementation of ADM standards, procedures, and expectations related to safety and process safety.
- Maintain program discipline through clear ownership, standard work, performance monitoring, and routine auditing.
- Partner with leaders to translate EHS and process safety requirements into practical operating practices.
- Identify gaps in program performance and establish action plans to close them.
- Serve as the primary site resource for PSM/TPS program requirements.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive safety and process safety capability-building strategy for the plant.
- Identify required EHS competencies by role and ensure appropriate training, qualification, and refresher programs are established.
- Develop and facilitate training for leaders, supervisors, operators, maintenance personnel, and other employees on critical EHS topics.
- Build capability around Life Critical Standards, PSM/TPS, hazard recognition, risk assessment, permit-to-work, emergency response, incident investigation, and other critical safety processes.
- Partner with Operations and Maintenance leadership to ensure training is translated into demonstrated field capability.
- Establish methods to verify understanding and competency rather than relying solely on training completion.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive EHS audit strategy, including internal, regulatory, and layered auditing.
- Lead or coordinate audits of safety, environmental, PSM, TPS, and other applicable programs.
- Ensure audit findings are appropriately risk-ranked, assigned, investigated, and closed.
- Establish effective verification processes to confirm that corrective actions address the underlying risk and are sustained.
- Monitor regulatory and ADM requirements and translate changes into site actions and program updates.
- Maintain management oversight for site Environmental Leader, who owns site environmental permitting (air, water, waste), chemical management, and compliance programs and ensure operations remain within permit and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain environmental permits and ensure required conditions, monitoring, inspections, and recordkeeping are completed.
- Partner with Operations and Engineering to identify opportunities to reduce environmental risk and improve compliance performance.
- Be a visible EHS leader who regularly engages with employees in the field and understands the realities of plant operations.
- Build a culture where employees and leaders identify and address hazards before they result in an incident.
- Develop leaders and frontline employees to own EHS performance rather than viewing EHS as solely the responsibility of the EHS function.
- Challenge unsafe conditions, behaviors, and decisions while maintaining strong partnerships with plant leadership and employees.
- Establish clear standards and expectations, verify performance through field presence and auditing, and drive sustainable improvement.
- Model ADM's commitment to protecting people, the environment, product, and the long-term sustainability of the business.
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related technical field preferred.
- Relevant experience in EHS leadership within a manufacturing, chemical, food, agricultural processing, or other high-hazard industrial environment.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, PSM, and applicable state and local regulatory requirements.
- Experience with process safety, hazard analysis, incident investigation, risk assessment, and safety management systems.
- Experience leading audits, regulatory inspections, corrective action programs, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong analytical, communication, influencing, and organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with frontline employees, technical personnel, contractors, and senior leadership.
