Job Summary
The AIX L3 System Administrator is responsible for expert‑level administration, engineering, and support of IBM AIX and pSeries environments. This role acts as the highest technical escalation point, owning complex troubleshooting, performance tuning, migrations, virtualization, and lifecycle management while ensuring system stability, security, and availability in mission‑critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
AIX & pSeries Administration
Install, configure, administer, and maintainIBM AIX servers in enterprise environments
PerformAIX OS administration, kernel management, and LVM management
Manageuser administration, security policies, password, and identity management
Administer system services such asNIS, NFS, Samba, and printer services
Virtualization & Power Platform
Strong expertise inPowerVM / VIOS, HMC, and AIX virtualization
Build and administerVIOS servers
ManageHMC administration and upgrades (Version 9 & 10)
Deep knowledge ofPower8, Power9, and Power10/11 pSeries architectures
Expert understanding of:
DLPAR
LPM (Live Partition Mobility)
Virtual networking
Virtual storage
SR‑IOV, vNIC adapters
Hands‑on experience withNPIV and SAN‑attached storage
Build, Migration & Lifecycle Management
PerformAIX server build and configuration using best practices
ManageNIM (Network Installation Manager) for OS deployment and maintenance
ExecuteOS patching, upgrades, and VIOS upgrades
Lead and executeAIXOS migrations: 6.1, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3.
Performhardware refresh, storage migration, and platform migrations
Experience inpSeries hardware commissioning and implementation
Performance, HA & DR
Analyzeresource utilization and system performance
Performperformance tuning and capacity planning
Strong experience instorage management,SAN environments, andHA concepts
Design and supportFault Tolerant systems,Business Continuity, andDisaster Recovery planning
Incident, RCA & Operations
Act asfinal escalation point for complex AIX and hardware‑related issues
Strong inhardware and OS‑level troubleshooting
LeadMajor Incident troubleshooting and RCA
Performtrend analysis, identify recurring issues, and drive corrective actions
Coordinate withhardware vendors for issue resolution
Plan, schedule, and execute changes; coordinate with cross‑functional stakeholders
Prepareweekly and monthly operational status reports
Adhere toITIL processes, quality, and security standards
Automation & Documentation
DevelopShell / Perl scripts to automate day‑to‑day administration tasks
Maintain and updatetechnical documentation, SOPs, and knowledge base
Support continuousknowledge acquisition and documentation updates
Leadership & Collaboration
Providetechnical SME support across projects and operations
Work closely with application, database, storage, network, and cloud teams
Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary technical and non‑technical teams
Work inrotational shifts and on‑call support models
Required Skills & Experience
8–12+ years of hands‑on experience inIBM AIX and pSeries administration
Deep understanding ofIBM AIX OS and Power Systems architecture
Strong experience withPowerVM, VIOS, HMC
Excellent troubleshooting skills forOS and hardware issues
Strong scripting skills (Shell, Perl)
Experience inenterprise production environments
Preferred Qualifications
IBM Certifications in:
AIX System Administration
pSeries Hardware
Performance Tuning
Network Administration
Experience inlarge, mission‑critical environments
Exposure tohybrid or cloud‑integrated IBM Power workloads
