Job Summary
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems.We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Engineering Manager III to lead and develop the Wildfire Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) Project Engineering team in Poway, CA. Wildfire is a new Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) designed to replace the MQ-9A Reaper using a ‘best of breeds’ approach from various GA-ASI product lines.
The Engineering Manager III will lead one or more project engineering teams. The position is responsible for maintaining technical excellence; planning and managing engineering resources; supporting the attraction, selection, retention, and development of talent; and ensuring that technical, schedule, quality, and cost objectives are achieved. The manager will serve as primary contact for engineering activities and will interface with engineering leadership, program management, customers, and other internal and external stakeholders.
This position requires strong technical judgment, management capability, and the ability to resolve complex engineering, resource, schedule, and program issues in a fast-paced development environment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and manage one or more significant project engineering teams supporting the Wildfire MMA program.
- Provide technical and organizational leadership for engineering activities from proposal development through design, integration, verification, validation, testing, delivery, and customer support.
- Establish and maintain technical, schedule, quality, staffing, and resource objectives for assigned engineering teams.
- Partner with program managers, technical staff, functional leaders, and senior management to establish priorities and resolve technical, schedule, staffing, and resource issues.
- Participate in establishing design concepts, engineering criteria, requirements, interfaces, and technical approaches for product development, testing, integration, and sustainment.
- Monitor technical performance and ensure engineering work products meet program, customer, quality, and organizational requirements.
- Provide direction and support for lab, ground test, flight test, integration, and customer-training activities.
- Resolve complex management and technical problems and make timely decisions involving scope, risk, cost, schedule, staffing, and system performance.
- Serve as the primary engineering contact for assigned project engineering activities and represent the organization in internal and external technical discussions.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with customers, program offices, suppliers, and internal engineering and business organizations.
- Participate in proposal development, new business, and expansion of existing business opportunities.
- Foster a team environment that promotes technical excellence, accountability, collaboration, safety, and professional growth.
- Identify training and development needs and provide mentoring and career guidance.
- Manage performance, priorities, and staffing in accordance with company policies and applicable program requirements.

Job Qualifications
- Typically requires a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in engineering or a related technical field as well as eleven or more years of progressively complex engineering experience. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.
- Demonstrates technical expertise in the application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.
- Must possess the ability to resolve complex management and technical problems.
- Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
- Customer focused.
- Must be able to work on a self-initiated basis and in a team environment.
- Able to work extended hours and travel as required.
- A Professional Engineering License, and original work(s) published in professional engineering journals are desirable.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
- Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience with unmanned aircraft systems, aircraft systems engineering, autonomy, mission systems, payload integration, flight-test operations, or related aerospace programs.
- Previous DoD experience.
- Experience with Earned Value Management, Integrated Master Schedules, risk management, configuration management, and technical performance measurement.
