Job Description
At BAE Systems Space & Missions Systems we develop and manufacture state-of-the-art RF & sensor technologies that are integrated into space, land, air, and sea-based platforms. If you’d like to lead our rapidly growing operations team in a mission to help the warfighter, this could be an ideal role for you.
The Strategic Operations Manager is a high-impact role responsible for bridging the gap between current manufacturing capabilities and future-state operational excellence. This individual will drive the strategic capability roadmap for the Tactical Production & Test Operations (TPTO) team, defining customer value across multiple value streams and removing the structural barriers to value creating activities. The ideal candidate is a systems thinker who can navigate ambiguity, translate customer value into work and capabilities across the production system, coach cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority, and act as the Lean susha (coach) across the TPTO organization.
The Operations Strategic Capabilities Unit plays a fundamental role in enabling efficient business and program execution – from strategic capital investments, industrial operations and an efficient supply chain, to state-of-the-art manufacturing and test operations and top-notch facilities management.
What You’ll Do:
- Develop a solid relationship with internal customers to identify their value proposition(s) and collaborate across value streams to design and execute a strategy that aims to maximize customer value.
- Manage a cross-functional team of industrial engineers, software developers, systems engineers, and talent development specialists, developing team members through coaching, establishing standards, and empowering team members.
- Engage value stream managers to clearly understand all value creating activities, identify structural barriers to value creation, and conceptualize and drive countermeasures to improve the flow of both knowledge and hardware.
- Drive strategic capabilities to deliver customer value, including operational capacity planning across the value stream, digital systems & manufacturing technology roadmaps, and organizational and talent development.
- Create and implement necessary process metrics to understand the health of operations and provide a baseline for continuous improvement.
- Manage the tools and processes to support the daily management and problem-solving systems across the TPTO team.
- Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by workingon-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
- May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
- May access other facilities in various weather conditions.
Required Skills and Education
- BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 12 or more years related experience.
- Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
- A current, active Secret security clearance is required.
- Deep experience in Lean Management Systems, including the ability connect customer value, organizational purpose, and system capability. Demonstrated ability to coach these skills in others.
- Curiosity and humility when approaching problems and challenging environments. Ability to drive collaboration and manage misalignment between individuals and/or groups.
- Proficiency in industrial engineering tools (work study, observation, task analysis and breakdown, data analysis) and project management methodologies.
- Ability to analyze complex organizational variables and their interactions to manage change and drive improvement at the system vs. local level.
- Solid understanding of business systems interfaces, information pathways and IT system lifecycles.
- Exceptional facilitation and relationship-building skills, with a demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders without formal authority.
- Certified or experienced in change leadership, with the comfort level to operate in an ambiguous environment.
