Summary
Balfour Beattyis seeking aGeneral Superintendent in Charlotte. The ideal candidate will be a proven field leader withstrong communication and coordination skills, responsible for managing all day-to-day construction activities on-site.
The General Superintendenthas the primary responsibility for all field operations, including the coordination of subcontractors’ work. Responsible for all field activities associated with the project, including ultimate responsibility for implementation of our Zero Harm® safety culture for the jobsite, supervision of all field construction work by subcontractors and self-performed work. Shares responsibility with the project managerfor developing the project budget, activelyparticipating in the preconstruction phase, and ensuring that theproject is built on time, within budget, and according to company policies and procedures. Manages andmentors superintendents, assistantsuperintendents and other field personnel.
EssentialFunctions
Project Financial Responsibilities:
- Help the project manager review and update progress and cost reports, schedules, andrequirements for completion on a regular basis.
- Actively participate in development and management of project’s general conditions, constructionschedule, project planning/phasing, and buyout strategy during preconstruction.
Preconstruction Services:
- Participate in preconstruction planning, when possible,regarding the project schedule and budget.Review project estimates and cost controlsystemat the beginning of the project.
- Communicate with subcontractors and employees (along with the project manager) a consistentlevel of expectations and directionregarding schedules, construction methods, company policies andprocedures, permits, qualitycontroland other performance standards. Ensure all employees haverelevant safety/loss prevention training for their position.
- Participate in making scopes for subcontracts and pre-bid/post-bid meetings.
Project Start-up and Scheduling:
- Thoroughly understand project specifications, the contract, and the contract’s general conditions,and confirm that all materials and subcontract workcomply with contract documents and qualityspecifications. Implement programs for EEO, risk management, training, and quality control.
- Explore and advise the project team on appropriate changes in methods, materials schedules, andprocedures. Ensure all materials areproperly tested according to specifications and ensure that all testresults are properly recorded.
Project Administration, Operations and Close-out:
- Ensure that project site and company assets are secure. Communicate individual safety roles,responsibilities and expectations to our clients, Operations staff, subcontractors,vendors, and thepublic tomaintain a safe and respectful working environment at all times.
- Manage and document employee and subcontractor problems or nonperformance (along with the project manager) through mentoring/training, disciplinary action, termination, back charges, or otherappropriate actions.
- Review and approve all bills for materials and subcontractor requisitions. Confirm that extra charges from subcontractors/suppliers arereasonable, and work is correctly executed. Coordinatewith the project manager for approval onextra charges.
- Facilitate weekly project progress and safety meetings with all subcontractor representatives and coordinate the upcoming week’s work. Partner with Safety and Health Professionals assigned to theproject site. Attend all progress meetings with the owner/architect representatives.
- Keep owners/architects informed of progress throughout the life of the project.
- Ensure that the project closeout process is finalizedto settle all financial obligations, demobilize allresources, and transition the project to the client.

Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 10+ years of commercial construction field experience. Depending upon theproject size, scope, andcomplexity, the years of experience mayvary. Depending upon the role, this may requiredemonstrated ability toassist with more than oneproject at a time.
- Strong understanding of structural, MEP, and architectural coordination.
- Proven ability to manage site operations, safety, and schedules.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Proficiency with construction software such as Procore, Bluebeam, and Primavera P6.
Preferred Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
- Experience managing a wide variety of project types (ground-up, renovation, adaptive reuse projects).
- Demonstrated success leading diverse subcontractor teams.
- OSHA 30 certification and advanced safety training.
