Varmoda is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to design, develop, integrate, test, and troubleshoot embedded software for electronic control systems. This role will support product lines involving diesel engines, battery-electric systems, and fuel-cell programs, with responsibility spanning embedded software configuration, model-based development, integration, build, verification, and production deployment.
The ideal candidate will have strong C/C++ programming expertise, hands-on embedded controls development experience, and proficiency with MATLAB, Simulink, or Stateflow. This engineer must be capable of translating system requirements into dependable embedded solutions while independently diagnosing complex software, hardware, and communication issues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software for electronic control systems.
  • Develop embedded solutions from requirements analysis through production and commercial deployment.
  • Program embedded applications using C and C++.
  • Apply model-based development practices to embedded control software.
  • Develop and integrate control software supporting diesel engine, battery-electric, and fuel-cell programs.
  • Use MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow to model, develop, simulate, and validate control functions.
  • Configure, integrate, build, and test embedded software components.
  • Develop and verify embedded software requirements in bench-testing environments.
  • Investigate and resolve software, system, communication, and hardware-related defects.
  • Use debuggers and diagnostic tools to perform root-cause analysis.
  • Analyze system performance and improve software efficiency, stability, reliability, and scalability.
  • Review electrical schematics, component specifications, and technical data sheets.
  • Develop and support embedded communication interfaces and protocols.
  • Work with CAN, SAE J1939, Ethernet, and related communication technologies.
  • Participate across the software development lifecycle, including requirements, functional specifications, development, integration, testing, and delivery.
  • Communicate development progress, technical constraints, risks, and findings to engineering teams and stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain technical designs, test evidence, development records, and system documentation.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science with an embedded-systems focus, or a related discipline.
  • Five to seven years of relevant professional experience.
  • At least five years of industry experience in:
    • C programming
    • Model-based development
    • Embedded control software development
  • Strong programming experience with C or C++.
  • Experience developing embedded software and electronic control systems.
  • Experience using debugging tools and troubleshooting complex system issues.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and component data sheets.
  • Knowledge of the complete software development lifecycle, including:
    • Business and systems analysis
    • Requirements gathering
    • Functional specification development
    • Software development
    • Testing and verification
    • Product delivery
  • Understanding of embedded hardware, software, and system interfaces.
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues and implement system changes necessary for resolution.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within cross-functional engineering teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with MATLAB, Simulink, and Stateflow.
  • Experience with application software development and integration.
  • Experience with embedded operating systems.
  • Experience developing communication software and protocols.
  • Python scripting experience.
  • Experience with engine or machine-control software development.
  • Experience supporting diesel engine controls.
  • Experience supporting battery-electric or fuel-cell control systems.
  • Experience diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Experience with:
    • CAN bus
    • SAE J1939
    • Ethernet
  • Familiarity with SQL, Visual Basic, or comparable supporting development technologies.
  • Experience with bench testing, hardware-software integration, and embedded verification.
Certifications & Clearance
Preferred Certifications
  • MATLAB or Simulink certification
  • Embedded Systems Engineering certification
  • Functional Safety certification, such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508
  • Relevant C or C++ programming certification
