Electrical Substation Engineer
Location : Fresno, Sacramento and Oakland
Role Summary
An Electrical Substation Engineer will be responsible for the engineering, design, review, and execution of high-voltage and medium-voltage substation projects. The role requires strong technical expertise in substation design, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and support during construction, testing, and commissioning phases.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Design
- Develop and review detailed engineering designs for HV/EHV substations (AIS/GIS).
- Prepare single line diagrams, layout drawings, GA drawings, control & relay schematics.
- Perform equipment sizing and selection for transformers, circuit breakers, isolators, CTs, PTs, surge arresters, bus bars, and associated equipment.
- Carry out grounding/earthing system design and calculations.
- Review protection schemes and relay coordination studies.
- Prepare technical specifications, BOQs, datasheets, and tender documents.
- Review vendor drawings, documents, and technical submissions for compliance.
- Ensure adherence to IEC / IEEE / IS / utility standards and project requirements.
- Coordinate with civil, protection, SCADA, and transmission line teams.
- Provide engineering support during procurement, construction, erection, testing, and commissioning.
- Attend design reviews, technical meetings, and client discussions.
- Address site technical queries and resolve design-related issues.
- Ensure designs comply with statutory regulations, safety standards, and QA/QC requirements.
- Support FAT, SAT, pre-commissioning, and commissioning activities.
- Assist in risk assessments and HAZOP/HAZID studies as required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (mandatory).
- 8–10 years of relevant experience in electrical substation engineering.
Technical Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of HV/EHV substation design (33kV and above).
- Experience with AIS and GIS substations.
- Proficiency in engineering tools such as:
- AutoCAD / MicroStation
- ETAP / CYME / SKM (preferred)
- Knowledge of protection systems, SCADA, and control systems.
- Familiarity with international standards (IEC, IEEE, IS).
- Good understanding of project lifecycle and EPC execution.
