CIMA+ is seeking an Electrical Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our growing Electrical Distribution team in Vancouver, BC.
This position is an excellent opportunity for an early-career electrical engineer interested in developing a career in the electric utility sector. Working alongside experienced engineers, designers and project managers, the successful candidate will support the planning, design, and delivery of overhead and underground electrical distribution projects for utility clients throughout British Columbia and Western Canada.
The role will provide exposure to the complete project lifecycle—from field investigation and preliminary design through detailed engineering, construction support, and project closeout—with increasing technical responsibility as experience develops.
Job Responsibilities:
As an Electrical EIT within the Distribution team, you will:
- Support the design of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems, primarily at medium voltage (4kV-35kV) levels.
- Prepare and assist with distribution designs involving:
- Overhead poles and associated framing
- Underground cable systems
- Duct banks, vaults, manholes, and pull boxes
- Pad-mounted transformers and switchgear
- Primary and secondary distribution systems
- Customer connections and service extensions
- System upgrades, replacements, and voltage conversions
- Perform engineering calculations, including:
- Voltage-drop calculations
- Cable and conductor sizing
- Equipment loading
- Short-circuit calculations
- Cable pulling calculations
- Non-linear analysis on overhead lines
- Review existing utility records, drawings, GIS information, survey data, and field information.
- Participate in field investigations and site visits to verify existing conditions and collect design information.
- Prepare engineering drawings, design packages, technical documentation, material lists, and construction work packages.
- Coordinate designs with civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, survey, and other engineering disciplines.
- Identify utility conflicts and support coordination with municipalities, utilities, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Support preparation of engineering estimates, scopes of work, schedules, and change documentation.
- Participate in internal design reviews, interdisciplinary reviews, safety by design meetings, constructability reviews, and quality-control processes.
- Assist Professional Engineers with technical evaluations, engineering studies, and design decisions.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to technical questions and documenting field changes.
- Support preparation of record drawings and project closeout documentation.
- Work in accordance with client standards, applicable CSA standards, BC Electrical Code, EGBC requirements, and CIMA+ quality-management practices.
- Develop knowledge of utility standards, engineering practices, construction methods, and distribution equipment through formal training and mentorship.
Required

- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited Canadian university or an equivalent recognized engineering program.
- Registered, or eligible for registration, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
- Strong interest in electrical power systems and medium voltage distribution engineering.
- Understanding of fundamental electrical engineering principles, including three-phase power systems, transformers, cables, grounding and protection-coordination.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical standards.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary project teams.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability and willingness to attend project sites and perform field work as required.
- Must possess a valid British Columbia driver's licence.
Assets
Experience or academic exposure in any of the following would be considered an asset:
- Electrical utility distribution systems
- Overhead and underground distribution design
- CYMDIST or similar load flow and short circuit analysis software
- Protection and coordination using CYMTCC or similar software
- AutoCAD or Civil 3D
- GIS applications
- Utility design and construction practices
- Working knowledge of BC Hydro distribution engineering standards and practices.
- Working knowledge of BC Hydro engineering standards ES43, ES53, ES54, and ES55.
- CSA C22.3 NO. 1-25
- BC Electrical Code
- Distribution pole modeling and analysis using SPIDA Calc and/or PLSCADD
- Cable ampacity and thermal analysis using CYMCAP or similar software
- Co-op, internship, or previous utility/consulting experience
