Apptopia is seeking a Head of Fundamental Investor Products to set the strategy for the fundamental investor business and to guide the research that makes it worth paying for.
Backed by powerhouse investors like Mark Cuban and ABS Capital, Apptopia estimates worldwide downloads, revenue, and active users for every mobile app, and runs a first-party panel that shows how people actually use those apps: who is engaging, how often, in which cohorts, and what they use alongside it. Institutional investors, equity research teams, and the platforms that serve them rely on that data to read a company's business between earnings prints. Our numbers reach the buy side directly through our own tools and APIs, and through distribution inside the terminals and platforms analysts already live in.
As Head of Fundamental Investor Products, you will own the strategy, the roadmap, and the research agenda for the analyst or portfolio manager who holds a position in a company and needs to know what is happening to that company right now. You decide what we build, which sectors we cover, and what our data has to prove before we sell a claim on it.You decide how we turn our data into value for this user: which products to build, which research to deliver, and which new data points to add. This position reports directly to the Chief Product Officer.
Responsibilities
- Own the strategy for the fundamental investor business: where we play, which sectors we cover, what we build next, and what we decline to build. Bring a point of view on the market and defend it with evidence.
- Set the direction the team executes. You define the problem, the user, the success criteria, and the priority order, and the team turns that into end-user product or delivered research. Stay close enough to make the tradeoff calls, far enough to keep your focus on the next 6 months rather than the next sprint.
- Set the research agenda with data science: which signals we build, which questions are worth answering, and what gets shipped, refined, or shelved.
- Hold the validation bar. A usage chart is not a product until the signal is shown to track the KPI the company actually reports. Own the standard for that proof (growth-on-growth fit, out-of-sample testing, lead time before the print, performance against consensus) and apply it before we make a read-through claim.
- Pick sectors where mobile is already top of mind for the investor, and start from the buy-side question rather than from the metric we happen to have.
- Sponsor the development of the new data points this user will pay for: transaction and subscription metrics, payer identification, demographic and engagement cohorts.. Inform what we build from the panel and what we license, based on what actually moves an investment decision
- Work across the company as the owner of this user. Partner with data science and engineering on what is possible, with Sales and CS on what customers are actually asking for and where we are losing, with Marketing and Research on how our work reaches the market, and with Partnerships on the platforms that distribute our data inside institutions.
- Be in front of customers regularly. Sit in on analyst calls, run win/loss and churn reviews with CS and Sales, and turn what you hear into roadmap decisions rather than a backlog of requests.
- Measure the impact of the strategy and report performance to the executive team and the board.
Skills & Requirements
- 10+ years of product management experience, with a track record of owning a product line or business rather than a feature set.
- Experience setting direction that a team executes. You are comfortable being accountable for outcomes you do not personally specify, and you know how to give a team enough context to make good decisions without you in the room.
- Fluency with how a fundamental investor works: how a model is built, what a reported KPI is, why consensus matters, and what happens in the weeks before a print. You do not need to have been an analyst, but you need to be able to hold a credible conversation with one.
- Experience with alternative data, market data, or another data product sold into financial services, ideally including both an application and a raw feed or API.
- Proven cross-functional influence. You can get research, engineering, sales, and marketing moving in the same direction without owning their teams.
- Quantitative comfort. You can work in SQL and notebooks, read a regression, and tell the difference between a signal that predicts a KPI and one that merely moves with it.
- Judgment about data honesty. You can decide what a number is good enough to claim, and you hold that line when there is commercial pressure to overstate it.
- Experience turning complex data into products a non-expert can use, including AI and agent-driven surfaces where the customer never touches a query.
- Experience seeking out and incorporating customer and usage data to understand behavior and make better prioritization decisions.
- Able to reach objectively good negotiation results, efficiently, while maintaining relationships.
- Creative and analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail.
What do we offer you?
- Flexible hours, location, and paid time off options
- Life Improvement Benefit (monthly stipend for employee wellness)
- Medical and Dental Insurance
- Company-sponsored 401(k)
- Free lunch on Fridays
