Job Description:

Provide technical support across all areas of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, ensuring continuity of patient care by providing coverage for clinical services as needed. Develop and maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform duties across multiple specialty services, including Community Practice, Dermatology, Integrative Medicine, Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Oncology, Wildlife and Zoo Medicine, Neurology, Ophthalmology, and Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care. Perform patient restraint, sample collection and submission, diagnostic support, operation of specialized equipment, client and referring veterinarian communication, medical record documentation, and other technical responsibilities required to support high-quality patient care across assigned services.

Veterinary Technician 1:

50%-Assist with patient care responsibilities for assigned clinical services during staffing shortages or absences, including patient restraint, specimen collection and submission, diagnostic test coordination, and related technical procedures. Develop a working knowledge of the specialized equipment, protocols, and technical skills required to effectively support patient care across all service areas. Contribute to hospital hygiene and bio security by maintaining a clean, safe, and organized environment and ensuring the hospital remains in a constant state of operational readiness.

25%-When not assigned to a clinical service, assist with nursing care and technical support in the Small Animal Intensive Care Unit (SAICU) and/or Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (SAER). Assist with the intake, triage, stabilization, and diagnostic workup of emergency patients until transfer to the appropriate specialty service. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, completing required documentation, entering diagnostic and treatment orders, collecting and submitting specimens, providing client updates, processing billing and medical record data entry, and coordinating patient discharge instructions and documentation.

10%-Assist with communication with service technicians, clinicians, and house officers in the assigned service to ensure seamless transitions when assuming or relinquishing coverage for a clinical service. Maintain accurate and timely documentation to support continuity of patient care and service operations. Assist with communicating with clients and referring veterinarians regarding patient care, diagnostic and treatment procedures, appointment scheduling, and follow-up care. Maintain accurate records of all client and referring veterinarian communications in accordance with hospital policies.

10%-Assist with blood bank on-call, holiday shifts, and emergency coverage in Small Animal ICU and Small Animal Emergency.

5%-Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree; OR associate's degree in veterinary technology AND must be actively licensed with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Registered Veterinary Technician.  

Preferred Qualifications:  

Actively licensed with the Louisiana Board of Veterinary Medicine as a Registered Veterinary Technician and one year of related experience. 

Veterinary Technician 2:
