Under general supervision, operates medium and heavy duty commercial passenger vehicles, transporting passengers to various locations and ensuring the safety of all passengers. Ensures the operational readiness of equipment and performs basic maintenance service activities.Responsibilities:
Transportation Operations
· Operates motor coaches, shuttle buses, vans, and other University-owned passenger vehicles in accordance with assigned routes, schedules, and established safety procedures.
· Provides transportation for students, faculty, staff, administrators, athletic teams, campus visitors, and University-sponsored activities.
· Safely loads and unloads passengers, luggage, equipment, and materials while ensuring passenger comfort and safety.
· Operates vehicles in compliance with all applicable Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Department of Transportation (DOT), State of Maryland, University System of Maryland, and Bowie State University regulations.
· Maintains awareness of road conditions, traffic patterns, and weather conditions to ensure safe vehicle operation.
· Utilizes transportation scheduling systems and other departmental technology to receive assignments and document transportation activities.
Safety, Compliance & Fleet Readiness
· Performs required pre-trip, and post-trip inspections and immediately reports mechanical defects, safety concerns, or maintenance issues.
· Performs basic preventative maintenance checks to ensure vehicles remain in safe operating condition.
· Maintains vehicle cleanliness by washing, sanitizing, fueling, and preparing assigned vehicles for daily operation.
· Performs routine cleaning and sanitation of bus restrooms, including disinfecting fixtures, restocking supplies, and disposing of waste properly.
· Coordinates and documents scheduled maintenance, inspections, emissions testing, repairs, and preventative maintenance activities.
· Completes accurate mileage logs, fuel reports, vehicle inspection reports, maintenance records, and incident reports.
· Responds appropriately to accidents, emergencies, or service interruptions while following established University procedures.
· Promotes and maintains a safe environment for passengers by following defensive driving practices and enforcing transportation safety policies.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Required: Valid Maryland Commercial Class B driver's license (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restrictions.
· High School Diploma or GED.
· Two (2) years of experience operating commercial passenger vehicles or providing professional transportation services preferred.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Knowledge of commercial passenger vehicle operation and preventative maintenance practices.
· Knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, State of Maryland, and University transportation regulations.
· Ability to safely operate commercial passenger vehicles in varying traffic, weather, and road conditions.
· Ability to identify, document, and report vehicle maintenance concerns.
· Strong customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills.
· Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm during emergencies.
· Ability to accurately complete required reports and documentation.
· Ability to work independently while maintaining professionalism and accountability.
· Commitment to safety, teamwork, and exceptional customer service.
Conditions of Employment:
· Must maintain a valid Maryland Commercial Driver's License with Passenger endorsement and an acceptable driving record throughout employment.
· Subject to pre-employment, post-accident, random, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in accordance with FMCSA regulations, State of Maryland requirements, and University policy.
· Candidates may be required to successfully complete medical examinations or inquiries to determine their ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
· Must maintain all required certifications, training, and licenses throughout employment.
· Continued employment is contingent upon compliance with all applicable federal, state, University, and departmental transportation policies and safety standards.
· Available for shifts during weekends, early mornings, late nights and overnights as needed.
