Job Description:
The Role
We are seeking an experienced and technically strong Director of Software Engineering to join our Shared Services Engineering organization, supporting our Brokerage Notification and Messaging Platforms.
This leader will drive the design, development and modernization of highly scalable, cloud native, event driven platforms, including our Event Distribution Platform and Fidelity Electronic Notification System (FENS).
We are looking for a proven platform builder who has successfully designed and delivered mission critical, high throughput, low latency systems from the ground up, with a strong emphasis on extensibility, resilience, automation and self-service capabilities.
The ideal candidate brings deep distributed systems expertise, strong software engineering leadership and hands on design/architectural experience building platforms that process millions of events and deliver reliable, real-time communications at enterprise scale.
A key focus will be building a configuration driven, self-service event notification platform that enables business and engineering teams to onboard new events, define processing workflows, configure business rules, manage subscriptions and introduce new communication capabilities with minimal custom development.
This role will also lead the transformation of legacy mainframe-based event generation and notification capabilities into modern, cloud native architectures supporting millions of Retail and Institutional Brokerage clients.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Engineering and Design
- Lead the design and development of highly scalable, resilient, low latency event processing and notification platforms.
- Drive design for high TPS, real time event streaming, asynchronous processing, intelligent routing, enrichment and multichannel notification delivery.
- Build reusable, API driven, configuration-based platform capabilities that support rapid onboarding and extensibility.
- Establish engineering standards for scalability, performance, high availability, fault tolerance and observability.
Self Service, Workflow Automation and AI
- Build a self-service platform enabling teams to onboard new events, configure business rules, and manage workflows with minimal custom development.
- Design scalable workflow automation and orchestration capabilities, including conditional routing, API integrations, event transformation, retries and error handling.
- Leverage AI and Generative AI to accelerate event onboarding, workflow creation, rule configuration, testing, and developer productivity.
- Explore AI powered workflow builders, intelligent recommendations, automated validation and operational insights.
- Ensure appropriate governance, explainability, auditability, and human oversight for AI enabled capabilities.
Engineering Leadership and Operational Excellence
- Partner with engineering executives, architects and product teams to define and execute a multiyear platform strategy.
- Lead and develop high performing engineering teams while providing strong technical and design direction.
- Own platform reliability, scalability, throughput, latency and production stability.
- Drive performance engineering, capacity planning, incident management and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate across business and technology teams to accelerate delivery of new notification capabilities.
The Expertise and Skills You Bring
Required
- 12+ years of software engineering experience with significant engineering leadership experience.
- Proven experience designing, building and scaling enterprise platforms from scratch through production adoption.
- Strong hands-on architectural expertise in high TPS, low latency, distributed event processing systems.
- Deep expertise in Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, microservices, event driven architecture and cloud native technologies, or comparable technologies.
- Experience building self-service, configuration driven, metadata driven, or workflow orchestration platforms.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous messaging, API integration, resiliency and scalability.
- Working knowledge of AI, LLMs and their practical application to engineering automation and platform capabilities.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management and executive leadership skills.
Preferred
- Experience building large scale event distribution, notification, messaging, or workflow platforms.
- Experience with email, SMS, push notifications, subscriptions and delivery orchestration.
- Experience with mission critical platforms in financial services, brokerage, payments, or other regulated industries.
- Familiarity with AI agents, Retrieval Augmented Generation(RAG), prompt engineering and spec driven development
Measures of Success
- Delivery of a highly scalable, resilient, low latency event notification platform.
- Increased speed of onboarding new events through self service capabilities.
- Successful modernization of legacy notification systems with minimal disruption.
- Improved platform throughput, reliability, operational efficiency and scalability.
Fidelity’s Onsite Working Model
Fidelity is transitioning to a full-time onsite working model through a phased rollout across regions and roles. Currently, some roles and locations require 100% onsite presence, while others require less. Onsite expectations are likely to evolve as the rollout continues.
