Our client is a well-established, privately held Ontario construction company with more than 30 years of experience. The organization has grown from strong civil and infrastructure roots into a diversified construction platform with capabilities across General Contracting, Construction Management, Design-Build, Infrastructure, Bridges, Aggregates and Land Development. Its General Contracting portfolio includes commercial, industrial, institutional and multi-residential projects throughout Ontario.
The Director of Construction is a senior leadership role responsible for the operational and strategic oversight of construction activity within the General Contracting division. Reporting to the Vice President of General Contracting, this person will lead project and field leadership teams and ensure consistent delivery across a portfolio of complex construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership across the General Contracting project portfolio.
- Lead, coach and performance-manage the Field Operations Manager, Project Managers and Project Coordinators.
- Oversee project delivery from preconstruction through closeout, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, budget and client expectations are consistently achieved.
- Monitor portfolio-level financial performance, forecasting, cost-to-complete, cash flow, change management and project risk.
- Review master schedules, resource plans, project controls, claims, change orders and earned-value metrics.
- Establish and standardize operating procedures, KPIs, scorecards and accountability practices across the construction group.
- Identify and mitigate contractual, operational, schedule and commercial risks across active projects.
- Act as a senior escalation point for major clients and support resolution of disputes, claims and complex project issues.
- Partner with Estimating, Preconstruction, Safety, People & Culture and Finance to improve project outcomes and organizational performance.
- Support business development, major proposals, client interviews, technology adoption and long-term workforce planning.
- Travel to project sites across Ontario as required to maintain visibility, support teams and ensure execution standards are met.
Qualifications and Experience
- Post-secondary education in Construction Management, Engineering or a related discipline.
- 15+ years of progressive construction experience, including 7+ years in senior leadership roles.
- Proven experience leading both field/Superintendent and project management teams within a General Contracting environment.
- Demonstrated success overseeing multiple projects and project leaders simultaneously rather than managing a single project.
- Deep knowledge of Lump Sum, Construction Management and Design-Build delivery models.
- Advanced understanding of project controls, scheduling, forecasting, risk management and dispute resolution.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario construction law, OHSA requirements, contracts, change-order mechanisms and permitting.
- Familiarity with Procore, Viewpoint Vista, MS Project and/or Primavera is an asset.
- Valid Ontario G driver's licence and ability to travel to project sites across the province as required.
- Executive-level communication, leadership, client management and decision-making capability.
What Will Make You Successful
- You have already led multiple Project Managers and field leaders in a general contracting environment.
- You understand construction operations at portfolio level and can balance schedule, cost, risk, quality and client expectations.
- You are equally comfortable in an executive meeting, a client escalation and a project-site review.
- You build accountable teams and can improve systems without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.
- You bring strong commercial judgment and can intervene early when project performance begins to drift.
Why Consider This Opportunity
This is a senior leadership opportunity with an established Ontario contractor offering a strong project platform, competitive executive-level compensation and the ability to influence how major construction work is delivered across the organization.
