The Director of Business Services provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and administrative direction for the University’s core business functions—Accounting, Student Accounts, and Purchasing—with an emphasis on ensuring efficient, compliant, and service‑oriented operations. The role is responsible for developing and implementing fiscal and administrative policies, monitoring financial performance, advising senior leadership on financial planning, and ensuring that business processes align with Minnesota State system requirements.
This position provides direct, hands‑on leadership to the Purchasing functional area, including vendor relations, contract management, competitive bidding, and compliance oversight. The Director ensures that all business operations support institutional goals, regulatory requirements, and high standards of customer service for students, faculty, and staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of theories and practices of management and supervision to direct human and fiscal resources so that program objectives are achieved
- Knowledge of budgeting, contracting, and processes to ensure compliance, efficient use of resources, and make proposals to achieve program initiatives
- Experience managing contracts, procurement processes, or vendor relationships
- Experience leading organizational change, process improvement, or operational efficiency initiatives
- Proficiency with enterprise business systems, financial management systems, and Microsoft 365 applications
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a complex organizational environment
- Analytical skills and written communication to draft and interpret policy and statute language and analyze complex policy and program issues
- Ability to embrace and lead programs in support of equity and inclusion, and demonstrated direct application of equity and inclusion in the work environmentÂ
- Bachelor's Degree in a Business discipline, Public Administration, higher education, or related fieldÂ
- Three (3) years experience in a supervisory role in business affairs or fiscal servicesÂ
Preferred QualificationÂ
- Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Higher Education Administration, Finance, or a related fieldÂ
- Experience with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as WorkdayÂ
- Demonstrated experience in developing human relations to understand, develop, motivate, collaborate with, and lead othersÂ
- Negotiation and/or mediation skills to resolve differences between competing or different positions, and to influence the endorsement, acceptance, and priority of policiesÂ
- Experience presenting financial, operational, or strategic information to executive leadership, governing boards, or other stakeholder groupsÂ
- Experience in navigating a union environment, such as an understanding of the grievance processÂ
- Previous experience in a supervisory role in higher education and/or a complex organizationÂ
