Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation (MLFC) seeks a strategic, forward-thinking leader to serve as Director of Advising Systems within the Office of Academic and Career Success. Reporting to the Executive Director of Academic and Career Success, the Director provides strategic and operational leadership for academic advising systems serving undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students across the college.

The Director establishes and advances college-wide advising practices, service standards, operational structures, and strategies that support student progression, persistence, and degree completion. The position leads strategic planning for advising services, aligning staffing, technology, data, policies, and practices with enrollment growth, evolving academic programs, and college student success priorities. The Director supervises Associate Directors responsible for pathway-based advising super teams. These interdisciplinary teams bring together academic advising, clinical and experiential placement functions, and holistic student success support to provide coordinated support throughout the student journey. The Director develops and coaches these leaders, establishes expectations and accountability, supports effective team design and workload management, and ensures consistent advising practices while allowing teams to respond to the distinct needs of their student populations.

The Office of Academic and Career Success where this position is housed, operates through a systems-of-care approach in which student success is shared across advising, enrollment, holistic support, career and workforce development, and placement functions rather than housed within a single unit. The Director works within a matrix leadership model and partners closely with the Director of Student Success Systems and Director of Career & Workforce Systems to align services, identify gaps and opportunities across the student journey, and translate college priorities into coordinated practices and scalable systems. This role requires a leader who can think strategically while building the structures necessary for effective execution. The successful candidate will be comfortable leading through change, developing other leaders, using data to identify emerging needs, and working across organizational boundaries to improve the student experience.

Essential Duties:

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for academic advising systems serving undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students across MLFC.
  • Establish and continuously improve college-wide advising practices, service standards, workflows, policies, and operating expectations that support consistent, high-quality student experiences.
  • Lead strategic and operational planning for advising services, anticipating the impact of enrollment trends, new and changing academic programs, student needs, and college priorities on staffing, capacity, systems, and service delivery.
  • Supervise, coach, and develop Associate Directors responsible for pathway-based advising super teams; establish clear expectations, decision rights, accountability, and measures of team effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership for an integrated super-team model that brings together academic advising, placement functions, and holistic student success support.
  • Partner with academic leadership and college stakeholders to translate curriculum, policy, program, certification/licensure, and academic requirement changes into effective advising practices and student-facing processes.
  • Work collaboratively within a matrix leadership structure with the Director of Student Success Systems and Director of Career & Workforce Systems to create coordinated approaches across recruitment and enrollment, advising, holistic student support, experiential learning, career development, and progression to graduation.
  • Use student, enrollment, persistence, service, and operational data to identify trends, anticipate needs, assess effectiveness, and guide resource and service decisions.
  • Lead change-management efforts related to advising systems, organizational structures, technology, policies, and new academic initiatives.
  • Develop structures for advisor and leader training, cross-functional learning, knowledge sharing, and ongoing professional development.
  • Establish escalation and decision-making structures for complex student, academic, operational, and cross-functional issues.
  • Evaluate advising capacity, workload, service demand, and organizational effectiveness and recommend changes to staffing, processes, technology, or service models.
  • Build strong partnerships with academic units, faculty, college leadership, and university partners to address barriers to student progression and improve the overall student experience.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, innovation, and student-centered decision-making.
  • Represent advising systems and the Office of Academic and Career Success on college and university committees, initiatives, and working groups as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling, education, organizational leadership, or a related field.
  • Progressive leadership experience in academic advising, student success, enrollment management, student services, or a related higher education function.
  • Experience leading advising or student-support services across multiple student populations, academic programs, or degree levels.
  • Experience supervising and developing managers or other leaders, including establishing performance expectations and accountability.
  • Experience designing, implementing, or improving advising practices, service-delivery models, workflows, or student-support systems.
  • Experience leading teams through organizational change, growth, restructuring, or implementation of new programs or services.
  • Experience working in a matrixed or highly collaborative environment in which outcomes require coordination across multiple functional areas.
  • Experience using data to assess student outcomes, service effectiveness, capacity, workload, or operational performance and translate findings into action.
  • Ability to think strategically and translate strategy into clear operational priorities, structures, and measurable outcomes.
  • Ability to develop leaders, build effective teams, navigate ambiguity, and foster shared ownership across organizational boundaries.
  • Evidence of effective communication.

Working Environment:

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting and involve extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and use of a computer mouse.
  • Position may require travel between campus locations or buildings for meetings or job-related tasks.
  • MLFC supports flexible work options for certain positions, such as alternate work schedules and hybrid remote arrangements, subject to approvals per ASU policy.
