Position Overview
Capital One is seeking a hands-on Full Stack Software Engineer to join its Core division's engineering team, which focuses on reducing operational toil by building innovative internal applications, automation solutions, and tools that improve engineering productivity.
This is a fast-paced, backend-focused engineering role requiring strong Python development skills, experience with REST APIs, SQL, AWS, CI/CD, and practical use of AI-assisted development tools. The engineer will work on internal notification and remediation solutions, identify technical problems, develop solutions, and deliver production-ready code quickly.
The ideal candidate is self-driven, adaptable, comfortable working with minimal supervision, and capable of taking ownership of tasks from problem definition through development, testing, deployment, and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain backend services and REST APIs using Python.
- Build and enhance internal engineering tools, notification applications, and automated remediation solutions.
- Develop and maintain SQL schemas, datasets, and data pipelines as required by project needs.
- Leverage AWS services to develop and support scalable cloud-based applications.
- Use AI-assisted coding tools and agentic AI solutions to accelerate development, troubleshoot issues, and improve engineering productivity.
- Work with existing MCP servers and integrate available AI capabilities into internal applications and workflows.
- Contribute to frontend development using React, with frontend work accounting for a smaller portion of the overall workload.
- Implement CI/CD processes and address application vulnerabilities, security findings, and compliance requirements.
- Troubleshoot application issues, analyze logs, support production systems, and resolve technical problems independently.
- Create and maintain observability dashboards using tools such as Splunk, New Relic, or similar monitoring platforms.
- Participate in Agile/Kanban ceremonies, daily stand-ups, Jira story tracking, quarterly planning activities, and technical demonstrations.
- Collaborate with team members, communicate progress clearly, and provide technical support to unblock others when needed.
- Work effectively in a dynamic environment where requirements may evolve and solutions need to be delivered within days or weeks.
- Strong hands-on experience inPython backend development.
- Experience designing and developing REST APIs and backend services.
- Working knowledge ofReact or similar frontend technologies and the ability to contribute to frontend development.
- Experience with SQL, database schemas, data modeling, and data pipeline development.
- Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and familiarity with cloud architecture and terminology.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automation, troubleshooting, and software deployment.
- Practical experience using AI-powered development tools, such as Claude Code or comparable AI coding assistants.
- Understanding of agentic AI development, AI-powered automation, or integration with existing MCP servers is highly desirable.
- Experience with application vulnerability remediation, security findings, and compliance-related engineering tasks.
- Familiarity with observability tools such as Splunk, New Relic, or similar platforms.
- Experience analyzing application logs and resolving production issues.
- Previous experience working with Capital One or similar large enterprise engineering environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, communication skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Experience building AI-powered developer productivity tools or agentic AI solutions.
- Familiarity with MCP server integrations and leveraging existing MCP capabilities within applications.
- Experience working with Go or maintaining Java-based legacy applications.
- Experience building internal engineering tools, notification systems, automated remediation solutions, and operational automation.
- Strong presentation skills and the ability to demonstrate completed solutions to technical stakeholders.
- 50% β Backend APIs and data: REST API development, database schemas, datasets, and related data processing.
- 25% β Security and compliance: Vulnerability remediation, compliance findings, and related engineering activities.
- 25% β Frontend and other engineering tasks: React development, troubleshooting, legacy application maintenance, and production support.
Team and Work Environment
The engineer will join a small, collaborative team of approximately 6β8 people. Team members typically own individual tasks but are expected to collaborate, learn quickly, and support colleagues when priorities change.
The team follows a Kanban-based workflow using Jira and conducts regular stand-ups, quarterly planning, and technical demonstrations. Engineers are expected to work with limited documentation, clarify problem statements, iterate quickly, obtain team feedback, and deliver solutions with minimal supervision.
Some production support and monitoring responsibilities may be required, including reviewing logs and resolving issues during the approximate 7:00 a.m.β9:00 p.m. support window. This does not imply continuous overnight on-call coverage.
