Isabella Freedman Jewish Retreat Center is a year-round retreat facilitylocated in Falls Village, CT. We serve 6,000 guests per year. We are currently seekingtwofull timeMashgichim and onepart time Mashgiach to join our food services team. This position requires a flexible schedule including nights, holidays, and weekends.The food at Isabella Freedman, a certified kosher kitchen, is focused on seasonal and local products prepared simply,utilization of a range of preservation methods, and increasinglyutilizing live fire cooking.  

The full-timemashgiachpositionis responsible forensuring all Kashrut laws are followed in the kitchen and food services.Local candidateshighly preferred. May include housing.  

Job Summary 

  • Monitoring of proper distinction (cooking, storing, labeling) between meat, dairy, and parve foods and implements. 
  • Monitoring of proper usage of kitchen on Shabbat and Jewish (Yom Tov) holidays by Jews and non-Jews.
  • Re-koshering of items, when necessary and possible.
  • Unlocking kitchen and dining hall doors in the morning and making sure they are locked (or will be locked by a trustworthy individual) in the evening.
  • Locking and unlockingappropriate meat and dairy cabinets when necessary.
  • Cleaning and checking greens and other produce (per mashgiach guidelines) for bugs.
  • Checking eggs for blood spots.
  • Toiveling (dunking new kitchen/dining hall items in natural body of water).
  • ProvidingKosher support (not under HKC supervision) to staff housing, asrequested.
  • Koshering kitchen for Passover and forChalov Yisroelretreat groups, as needed.
  • “Taking challah” from baked goods (when necessary).
  • Training new kitchen and dining hall staff on the rules of Kashrut.
  • Documenting and updating kosher policies for Isabella Freedman, including correspondence with the HartfordKosherCommission (HKC).
  • Checking andmaintaining the campus eruv. 

Skills: 

  • Candidate must be halachically observant and have a working knowledge ofhilchot kashrut, shabbat, anderuvin. 
  • Must obtain aServeSafe Food Handler’s Certification.  
  • Experience working in a Kitchen.  
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team and communicate wellwith others.  

General: 

  • Attend weekly department meetings. 
  • Attend monthly all-staff meetings, whenavailable.
  • Mustpossess a solid work ethic with strong organizational and time-management skills, excellent attention to detail,professionalverbal, and written communication skills in English, as well as provide excellent customer service. 
  • Mustmaintain a professional demeanor. 
  • Other tasks/duties as assigned. 

Working Conditions: 

This isanexempt position with work hoursonany day of the week. (Depending onthe program schedule.)
