External Job Description
What is NATS?NATS is the UK’s leading Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP). Every year we handle around 2.5 million flights and over 300 million passengers travelling in UK airspace. We provide air traffic management (ATM) services to 15 airports in the UK as well as providing these services around the world spanning Europe, Middle East, Asia and North America.
We’re shaping the future of ATM through our focus on ‘advancing aviation and keeping the skies safe’ and believe that the size and diversity of our business make us an exciting choice for undergraduates considering their future careers.
What will the Cyber Industrial Placement involve?
This one-year placement is for undergraduate students in their penultimate year. You’ll be based at our Head Office in Whiteley or our Air Traffic Control Centre in Swanwick, Hampshire, with flexibility to work from home where the role allows.
NATS is part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure, and cyber security is essential to protecting the systems that support safe air traffic operations. You’ll join our Cyber Risk and Information Security team and gain experience of how it helps NATS manage security risks and build a positive security culture.
Your work could include:
• helping to develop and communicate security policies and standards
• supporting assurance activities and identifying opportunities to improve security practices
• supporting work with regulators to meet internal and external requirements
• helping to apply security architecture principles to business needs
• contributing to activities that build security awareness, including awareness of insider threats
• taking part in exercises that help teams prepare for potential incidents
You may also have the opportunity to shadow colleagues in other areas, including our Security Operations Centre (SOC), to see how their work contributes to NATS’ cyber security. Why choose NATS?
You’ll work at the heart of our organisation alongside other placement students, graduates and experienced professionals. You’ll gain insight into our business while contributing to work that supports safe air traffic operations.
Your placement will help you apply what you’ve learned at university, explore different aspects of cyber security and develop practical skills with support from experienced colleagues. We’re committed to your personal and professional development throughout the year.
What are we looking for?
We’re looking for curious, collaborative students who are interested in cyber security and willing to learn. You don’t need to be studying cyber security or a technical subject to apply. We welcome different academic backgrounds and perspectives.
You’ll need to be studying towards a degree that allows you to complete a 12-month industrial placement as part of your course.
To be eligible to apply, you must have indefinite, unrestricted right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, we cannot consider candidates whose right to work is time-limited or dependent on visa sponsorship.
You must be able to obtain Security Clearance (SC Level). Additional SC guidance can be found here.
