Salary: $32,240 (his position has an established starting rate)

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to read, write, speak and understand English to effectively communicate and understand others, and to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to operate powered and non-powered cleaning equipment. Must be willing and able to learn the use of heavy floor care equipment.
• Ability to work with and properly use or learn to use cleaning chemicals and agents, including dilution and dispensing systems.
• Ability to work outdoors in temperatures below 32 degrees and indoors above 90 degrees.
• Ability to stand for extended periods of time; lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.; tolerate frequent bending, stooping, and climbing stairs

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrated knowledge of commercial cleaning practices.
• Previous experience working as a custodian is highly desirable.
• Commercial Cleaning experience is a plus.

Conditions of Employment

• This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
• This position is subject to overtime (both scheduled and unscheduled). This position may work a non-traditional schedule, typically weekends and holidays.
• Flexibility in scheduling and availability to accommodate special events, emergencies, and/or unscheduled work assignments, which typically include working weekends, holidays.
• This position will be required to wear personal protected equipment (PPE) during specific work duties as determined by the department.
• The ability to stand for extended periods of time; lift and carry objects up to 50 lbs.; tolerate frequent bending, stooping, and climbing stairs.
• This position has been designated as essential and will require reporting to work when the university is officially closed.

Job Duties

Perform general custodial and cleaning duties in academic, auxiliary, athletic, administrative and/or residential facilities. (75%)

• Clean, sanitize and maintain living, teaching, studying, work, research, and public spaces, inside, outside, and around campus facilities by following established practices and procedures.
• Empty and clean trash and recycling receptacles. Remove trash and recycling from the building.
• Clean, dust, and wipe fixtures, furniture, floors, surfaces, walls, and windows.
• Refill restroom dispensers.
• Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors.
• Strip, clean, buff and apply floor cleaners, sealers, and finishes to hard surface floors.
• Vacuum, spot clean, and extract carpets.
• Use power equipment and hand tools: vacuums, buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, hands-free or pressure washers, brooms, buckets, mops, and squeegees for the cleaning and general maintenance of floors, walls, carpets, furniture, etc.
• Use step ladders, specialized cleaning tools, and personal protective equipment (PPE) when required in work assignments.• Move furniture to facilitate deep cleaning and prepare floors for refinishing.
• Perform routine preventive maintenance on power equipment and hand tools, i.e., empty, clean, rinse, and wash; change belts, hoses, brushes, and bags; etc.
• Responsible for the orderliness/cleanliness of assigned housekeeping closets and equipment storage areas.
• Follow verbal and written instructions for the use and application of chemicals and supplies.
• Responsible for proper mixing, labeling, storing, and use of a variety of chemicals and cleaning agents.
• Check, restock, and maintain supply levels.

Respond to tenant inquiries and requests for service. (10%)

• Report building damage or the need for building repairs.
• Work closely with peers and customers to meet the needs of the area.
• Resolve problems quickly and effectively.
• Report and respond to emergency calls for custodial assistance.

Outside Work (5%)

• Work outside to remove snow, ice, and debris from entrances, steps, and sidewalks, using various tools and products.
• Clean exterior windows as directed.

Maintain continuous control and accountability for assigned building keys. (5%)

• Lock and unlock buildings as directed.
• Secure buildings when not in use.
• Report unauthorized occupants or use.

Implement the Building Services Mission and Vision/Other duties. (5%)

• Understand and consider the global nature of the University. Recognize and value the advantages that diversity can bring.
• Work effectively with and around people with different viewpoints and backgrounds.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including assignments in support of other university operations.
