Purpose

This position supports the Curator of Prints, Drawings and European Art and the Assistant Curator of Prints and Drawings. Reporting to the Curator, the Curatorial Assistant will provide care for the museum’s collection of works on paper, assist in research, and offer administrative support.


Responsibilities

Collections Care and Management  

  • Assists in maintaining proper housing of the works on paper collection, including monitoring physical climate and requesting maintenance as needed for storage areas.
  • Carries out art handling for collections care, exhibitions, and rotations and may assist with art movement for classes, research, and museum events, as needed.
  • Maintains records and enters data into TMS collection management database.
  • Processes new acquisitions in collaboration with curators, registrars, and preparators.


Curatorial Support

  • Facilitates communication with Blanton staff and collaborators.
  • Assists with art historical research.
  • May edit and write interpretive materials and contribute towards special projects, including digital publications.
  • May assist in supervising undergraduate and graduate interns.
  • Performs other administrative tasks as needed, including maintaining office supplies and processing University-required paperwork related to travel and purchasing for department, outside vendors, artists, and speakers.

H-E-B Study Room Support

  • Coordinates with Blanton and UT staff for physical maintenance of study room.
  • May monitor the study room while artwork is on view for classes or general visits, as needed.
  • Maintains records of study room visits and reports usage, as requested.
  • Supports programming in the study room.

 

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Studio Art, Museum Studies, or a related field
  • Strong interest in works on paper
  • Skilled in art historical research
  • Ability to follow protocols in handling delicate works of art with care
  • Demonstrated accuracy and strong attention to detail; superior organizational skills
  • Works well independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent written communication

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in an art museum or special collections library
  • Experience handling works on paper
  • Familiarity with TMS

Salary Range

$45,000


Working Conditions

  • Standard office environment
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds


Work Shift

  • M-F, 8am - 5pm
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for special events.
