Job Description
The Controller will lead the day-to-day accounting and tax operations – the monthly close, reporting across four legal entities in four countries, revenue and cost accounting, tax and internal controls underneath it all. This role is central to building the financial infrastructure, reporting discipline, and controls needed to support a growing multi-revenue-stream technology and services business.
Reporting to the VP of Finance, you will lead a team spanning general accounting, tax, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and billing — including two direct managers, the Accounting Manager and the Tax Manager. We seek candidates who are hands on leaders, would rather build process than inherit one, are excited about what AI can do to improve workflows and thrive in a fast-moving environment.
Key Responsibilities
Close, Consolidation & ReportingÂ
- Set the close standard and calendar, driving towards a consistent close within 10 business days that gives leadership real insight into business operationsÂ
- Review and approve the financial statements, reporting package, account reconciliations, and supporting schedulesÂ
- Own multi-entity reporting across the US, UK, Canada, and France as a controlled group, including transfer pricing arrangements and foreign currency translationÂ
- Govern the chart of accounts, holding consistent treatment across entities, revenue streams, and cost streamsÂ
- Partner with a new FP&A team on the execution of the financial plan —this role owns the actuals and department-level reporting to leaders, with FP&A owning the planÂ
Revenue & Cost AccountingÂ
- Oversee accounting across the company’s revenue streams: product resale, software subscriptions, maintenance and renewals, cybersecurity, and professional and managed servicesÂ
- Develop and own the cost allocation methodology used to report gross margin by product and service line, reporting meaningful insights into the profitability of each business unitÂ
- Collaborate with Sales Operations to approve accounting positions on new, non-standard, and judgment-heavy transactionsÂ
TaxÂ
- Own the tax function in partnership with the Tax Manager, covering federal, state and local income tax, sales and use tax, VAT, and Canadian indirect taxÂ
- Manage multi-state and multi-country registrations and nexus as the company growsÂ
Systems, Controls & AuditÂ
- Serve as the accounting system owner for QuickBooks, including the integrity of the general ledgerÂ
- Partner with Business Systems Developers and Sales Operations to strengthen the Salesforce-to-QuickBooks workflow supporting bookings, billing, and revenue recognitionÂ
- Design and maintain internal controls, and prepare the company for its first external auditÂ
- Own sales commission and incentive compensation calculations, accrual methodology, and reportingÂ
- Oversee payroll in partnership with People Operations — payroll accounting and reconciliation across four entities, plus the controls over pay changes, approvals, and off-cycle runsÂ
- Own the expense policy and spend management program, ensuring policy is current, communicated, and enforcedÂ
- Support diligence and reporting requests as the business scalesÂ
- Identify and implement process improvements and controls across month end close, financial reporting, AP and spend management, customer billing, AR, and sales commission reporting. Â
Team LeadershipÂ
- Lead, develop and mentor a growing accounting team, including setting individual development goals and supporting career growth as the team scalesÂ
- Build organizational structure and role clarity within the accounting function as headcount grows, including identifying when and where to add capacityÂ
- Set priorities and workload across the team to meet close deadlines and reporting commitmentsÂ
- Establish team norms, documentation standards, and cross-training practices to reduce key-person risk as the company expandsÂ
- Act as a key partner to the VP of Finance on team capacity planning, structure and hiring needsÂ
- Model and reinforce a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvementÂ
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferredÂ
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including people management, with at least 2 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller capacityÂ
- Demonstrated experience building or scaling an accounting team, including hiring, structuring roles, and developing staffÂ
- Strong GAAP knowledge, particularly revenue recognition and COGS matching across multiple revenue streamsÂ
- Experience in a technology, MSP/VAR, or subscription and services-based business strongly preferredÂ
- International, multi-entity experience strongly preferredÂ
- Experience partnering cross-functionally with leaders, particularly on topics with financial and compliance implicationsÂ
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks (or comparable ERP) and CRM-to-GL revenue workflows; Experience with accounting system migration a plus; Salesforce experience a plusÂ
- Track record of owning and improving the monthly close processÂ
- Experience supporting an audit, financial statement restatement, or transaction diligence process is a plusÂ
- Strong communicator, comfortable with non-finance stakeholders, auditors, and outside advisorsÂ
Additional Compensation: This position is eligible for discretionary incentive compensation and/or bonus opportunities based on individual and company performance.
