SUMMARY:
Â
The Communications Intern supports the City’s internal and external communication efforts. Under general supervision, the Communications Intern assists in creating, editing, and distributing content through social media, newsletters, websites, press releases, and physical flyers. The Communications Intern assists with writing, photography, videography, graphic design, proofreading, public outreach efforts, and projects in the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:These tasks are typical for this position and may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with the development of social media content, including graphics, captions, photography, press releases, and short-form video.
- Identify opportunities to incorporate current digital trends consistent with the city's brand.
- Assist with the design of engagement reports, presentations, publications, and other print and digital communication materials while ensuring consistency with the city's brand.
- Support department events, press conferences, and other public-facing activities in the community through photography, videography, logistics, and communications assistance as needed.
- Distribute flyers to community members and public locations.
- Adhere to brand guidelines and standards of the city.
- Assist with public outreach efforts.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Enrollment in an accredited undergraduate program in Communications, Marketing, or closely related field and status as a Junior or Senior.
- Relevant coursework, demonstrating an interest and aptitude to work in a related field of study.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- None required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of Adobe and basic design principles.
- Knowledge of social media platforms and digital communication tools.
- Knowledge of Canva.
- Knowledge and ability to use computers and related applications.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize multiple projects.
- Ability to communicate effectively and accurately, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others.
- Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work independently.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration, and percent and to draw and interpret various graphs.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

TRAVEL:
Travel is minimal (estimated ~5%) and consists mostly of local travel to clients and stakeholders with potential overnight travel for conferences in and out of state.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:
This is a part-time position, up to 20 hours per week. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Evening, weekend and work hour adjustments may be required as job duties demand.
