About American Terawatt
American Terawatt is building a new industrial electric grid for the United States.Executing successfully means engaging in power development at a national scale. This means understanding market conditions at macro and micro level.
We design and deploy advanced power transmission systems, serving large industrial loads, hundreds of megawatts at a time. Our systems deliver electric power to everything from frontier AI datacenters to highly automated manufacturing, refineries, mines, and more.
We make interconnection fast, simple, and cheap. On our network, generation owners get their projects online faster, delivering abundant power at competitive prices.
The backbone of American Terawatt’s network is high power HVDC transmission, anchored by our unique terminal design. American Terawatt’s HVDC terminals are standardized, modular, and natively integrate energy storage. Each one is designed to expand to operate as a full node on our future HVDC transmission network.
About the Role
We are hiring aCommercial Lead, Energy Marketsto identify where our transmission network can create the most value and turn market signals into actionable development opportunities.
You will work directly with our founders and the Origination, Development, and Engineering teams, taking ownership of our market model, opportunity pipeline, and portfolio recommendations.
This is a hands-on builder role for someone who wants to shape where and how a new national transmission network develops.
This is currently a senior individual contributor role, with the opportunity to grow into broader ownership of market and portfolio strategy as the company scales. You will report directly to the COO.
What you will own
As our Commercial Lead, Energy Markets at American Terawatt, you will:
Build and maintain a market model that identifies and quantifies potential transmission development opportunities for American Terawatt.
Combine and analyze data including announced data center capacity, generation interconnection and queue filings, industrial development, turbine and genset order flow, transmission queue, permit filings, financing announcements, load forecasts, utility grid congestion, and other signals.
Build and maintain a repeatable system for identifying, prioritizing and tracking a portfolio of specific transmission development opportunities. Track newly announced or filed loads and generation, anticipate where load will exceed available on-site or co-located generation and identify generation that could serve those loads
Within our target markets, identify potential generation partners, including greenfield, existing, curtailed, and stranded projects, and match them with data centers or other large loads within a defined radius to improve project economics and accelerate timelines.
Perform desktop preliminary diligence on opportunities and partners with an eye toward feasibility, highlight risks and opportunities, identify tradeoffs, and make recommendations.
Model the commercial impact of individual link development as part of our broader network strategy, regionally and nationally. Identify how planned or in-progress links open opportunities to add further nodes or extensions which improve the network’s total value, and reduce interconnection times and power costs for each additional user.
What success looks like
You will help shape the exact roadmap, but we expect success in this role to include the following early milestones:
In your first month
Develop a working understanding of American Terawatt’s network strategy, target markets, and current development opportunities.
Review existing data sources, models, and pipeline processes and identify the most important gaps.
Align with the founders, Origination, Development, and Engineering on evaluation criteria, priorities, and initial deliverables.
By month six
Maintain a reliable market model that is actively used to guide outreach, development, and investment decisions.
Build a prioritized pipeline of actionable opportunities, with clear recommendations and supporting analysis.
Establish a repeatable process for working with Origination, Development, and Engineering to evaluate and advance opportunities.
What you bring
Required Experience
Demonstrated professional experience in energy analysis, energy GTM, or capacity/resource planning for an energy developer, utility, IPP, consultancy, hyperscaler, or similar. Your analysis should have contributed significantly to investment, development or budgetary decisions.
Strong quantitative modeling skills: fluent building and maintaining financial/market models, plus the ability to wrangle messy public and proprietary data programmatically (Python, SQL, or equivalent).
Familiarity with US wholesale power markets and the interconnection process — ISO/RTO market design, LMPs and congestion, and the generator interconnection queue (cluster studies, FERC Order 2023). Understanding of utility and ISO/RTO tariff filings and rates
Preferred Experience
Experience in some of the following areas would be valuable:
Renewable and conventional power generation, energy storage, and related energy infrastructure.
Datacenter or large industrial load development and power procurement (hyperscaler demand, co-location / behind-the-meter structures).
Transmission economics and planning, ideally including HVDC; nodal/congestion or basis analysis.
Transmission interconnection submissions, utility transmission RFP responses
Commercial exposure to PPAs, offtake or tolling structures, and development-stage risk modeling.
Programming/analytics depth (Python data stack, GIS/geospatial for siting) and building analytical processes from scratch in an early-stage environment.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation: Competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, including salary and material equity participation.
Healthcare: Medical, dental, and vision coverage, including 75% coverage for dependents and spouses.
Wellness: Up to $300/month reimbursement for gym and wellness expenses, or Bay Club membership for SF-based employees.
