Summary:

Coding Manager
Location: Hybrid (Onsite and Remote)
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Coding Manager to lead and oversee inpatient, outpatient, and professional coding operations. This leadership role is responsible for managing coding staff, monitoring productivity and quality metrics, identifying workflow optimization opportunities, and driving performance improvement initiatives across the coding department.

The ideal candidate will possess strong coding expertise, proven leadership skills, and a passion for operational excellence. This individual will collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure coding accuracy, regulatory compliance, productivity standards, and continuous process improvement.

Qualifications Required
Associate's degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of coding experience in a healthcare setting.
Comprehensive knowledge of inpatient, outpatient, and professional coding operations.
Demonstrated ability to analyze data, manage workflows, and drive operational improvements.

Preferred
Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
Previous supervisory or management experience.
Strong leadership, communication, and employee development skills.
Experience leading productivity, quality, and performance improvement initiatives.

Job Description Summary
The Manager Coding provides leadership and oversight for coding operations, ensuring the accurate, timely, and compliant assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes that support quality reporting, regulatory compliance, and appropriate reimbursement. The Manager Coding leads coding staff, drives performance improvement initiatives, and collaborates with providers, clinical departments, HIM, CDI, and Revenue Cycle teams to optimize documentation integrity and coding accuracy. This role is responsible for coding quality, productivity, education, compliance, workflow optimization, and leveraging data analytics to improve financial and operational outcome.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Directs and oversees daily operations of the medical coding department, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant assignment of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS codes.

  • Manages, coaches, and develops coding staff through recruitment, onboarding, performance management, education, and professional development initiatives.

  • Monitors coding productivity, quality, and coding lag metrics, implementing process improvements to optimize operational efficiency and financial performance.

  • Conducts routine coding audits and quality reviews to ensure compliance with federal, state, payer, and organizational coding guidelines and regulations.

  • Collaborates with providers, CDI specialists, HIM, Revenue Integrity, Patient Financial Services, and other stakeholders to improve documentation quality and coding accuracy.

  • Analyzes coding-related data, trends, denials, and reimbursement impacts to identify opportunities for revenue optimization and risk reduction.

  • Develops, maintains, and enforces coding policies, procedures, and standard work processes that support regulatory compliance and operational excellence.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert on coding regulations, reimbursement methodologies, payer requirements, and industry best practices, providing education and guidance to leadership and clinical teams.

  • Partners with compliance and audit teams to investigate coding concerns, resolve discrepancies, and implement corrective action plans when necessary.

  • Leads strategic initiatives related to coding technology, workflow automation, artificial intelligence tools, and system optimization to enhance coding accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
