Metals Estimator/Project Manager

POSITION SUMMARY

The Metal Fabrication Estimator / Project Manager is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for miscellaneous metals projects, including steel stairs, railings, ladders, and structural steel components. This position manages projects from bid solicitation through project turnover, serving as the primary point of contact for customers, vendors, subcontractors, and internal fabrication and field teams to ensure successful project execution.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Estimating (Primary Function)

• Review construction bid documents, architectural drawings, structural drawings, specifications, and blueprints to prepare detailed cost estimates and material take-offs.
• Calculate labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and other project costs to develop competitive bid proposals.
• Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers, subcontractors, and manufacturers.
• Prepare bid packages, required bid forms, and supporting documentation.

• Communicate with general contractors/construction managers to clarify scope of work and schedule requirements

• Actively participate in the internal review of estimated projects.
• Maintain and update the project bid schedule and ensure estimates are completed within established deadlines.
• Conduct site visits and pre-bid walkthroughs as required.
• Follow up on submitted bids and maintain communication with clients throughout the bidding process.
• Actively participate in pre bid and post bid scope review meetings, proposal reviews, and negotiations with clients.
• Transition awarded projects to project management and accounting by creating budgets, conducting “Kickoff” meetings to other team members, identifying special project requirements, subcontractors, and vendors

Project Management

• Manage awarded projects from handoff through completion.
• Serve as the primary contact for customers, consultants, subcontractors, and internal project stakeholders.
• Prepare and track project submittals, RFIs, change orders, and project documentation.
• Coordinate fabrication drawings with estimators, detailers, shop personnel, and field operations to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
• Develop and monitor project schedules, budgets, and project milestones.
• Coordinate fabrication and installation subcontractors, including contracts, work progress, invoicing, and project documentation.
• Conduct periodic jobsite visits to monitor progress, resolve issues, and support successful project delivery.
• Coordinate project turnover with fabrication, shop, and field personnel.
• Price change orders and revisions for ongoing projects.
• Assist the Superintendent and Foreman in resolving scope problems
• Ensure that every project is managed to maximize customer satisfaction
• Effectively defend and negotiate change orders and maintain relationships while producing revenue for the company
• Ensure punch lists are completed to customers satisfaction
• Ensure job processes are followed in accordance with company policies
• Ensure Foreman, Superintendent, and Field staff are following project safety plan
• Work with accounting to complete monthly job billings, change order tracking, and project close outs.
• Build and maintain strong customer relationships while identifying opportunities for future work

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, AND/OR EXPERIENCE

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Drafting, Construction Science, or a related field preferred. Equivalent industry experience may be substituted.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in metal fabrication estimating, project management, or a combination of both.
• Experience with miscellaneous metals and structural steel projects preferred.
• Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, structural drawings, welding symbols, and construction specifications.
• Thorough understanding of steel fabrication and erection methods.
• Proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to manage multiple bids and projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
• Strong organizational, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
