Role:
The Chief of Police is responsible for providing leadership and direction for all operations of the GCCC Police Department. The Chief of Police will maintain the department's strategic vision, mission, and policies, ensuring all policy and procedural decisions support the department’s operations, police services, and the security of the College. Serve as a catalyst for positive development, center on student success, and promote community policing and collaboration within the realm of law enforcement.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Lead the Campus Police Department to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, faculty and staff.
- Foster collaboration and partnerships with campus stakeholders, local law enforcement, and community organizations.
- Ensure fair, unbiased, and equitable practices across all aspects of policing, fostering an inclusive environment for all community members.
- Implement and oversee community policing that engages and builds trust with students, faculty, staff and the campus community.
- Stay current on evolving law enforcement practices, technologies, and community needs.
- Ensures institutional compliance with the Clery Act by managing all federal reporting requirements.
- Coordinates the compilation, publication, and distribution of the Annual Security Report and Fire Statistics.
- Developing, training and enforcing safety and security policies and procedures.
- Supervise police department staff, including but not limited to hiring and training, assigning work hours.
- Oversee departmental budget, including equipment, supplies and uniforms.
- Assisting those in need.
- Conflict resolution and exercising patience.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Performance Measurements:
- To maintain a good working knowledge of the state and local law enforcement codes and all school policies.
- To possess the ability to assess a situation quickly and control it.
- Keep administration informed of activity on campus.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience:Â Five years to ten years of similar or related experience.
Education: (1) A two year college degree or (2) Completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or (3) Completion of a specialized and extensive in-house training or apprenticeship program.
Interpersonal Skills:Â Courtesy, tact, and diplomacy are essential elements of the job. Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the college for purposes of giving or obtaining information, building relationships, or soliciting cooperation. Must have previous supervisory and management skills. Must successfully pass a drug test, background check and psychological exam.
Other Skills:Â Must be a self-disciplined individual with high ethics, professionalism and human compassion. Good moral character with the ability to choose and act wisely and within the confines of accepted morality is the foundation for effective police work. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and/or can be of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating or influencing others. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Basic computer skills are necessary.
Physical Requirements:Â Â Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of 30 pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment. The job requires varying amounts of sitting, climbing, kneeling, standing and walking. Job requires average agility and dexterity.
Work Environment:Â Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions or variations such as those found in variable weather conditions.
